Major PC upgrade

Recommended Posts

I am thinking of a PC upgrade with a budget of £1.000-£1,200 and am considering either Alpine, Chillblast or Wired2Fire. As I'm not a computer expert please don't suggest self builds.

My preference is flying prop and jetliners so the sky is my usual habitat. Having said that I would also appreciate suggestions for both scenery/airport and WX add ons.

Of course everyone has their own kit and bias and I expect a plethora of replies (hopefully) and opinions.

I thank you all in advance and look forward to the deluge. :thum:

Best, Geoff

Before you go any further, what have you already got?  just to see what you actually need.

What is your screen size now and do you need to upgrade it?  How many screens do you use?

Is your mouse and keyboard ok?

Is there not a local PC shop who can build the ones you state for around the same spec and price?

What version of Windows have you got as you could place that on the new machine saving money for elsewhere??

Answer on the back of a used potage stamp please ASP

Hi jaydor, thanks for you reply. I don't know the spec of my current PC as it was put together by a local PC shop and cannot find the spec list at present.

Due to space limits the one screen I have is sufficient for the moment and was not included included in the above budget.

Same goes for mouse and keyboard.

I'm pleased with the local PC shop but they are not geared for flight simming, that's why I'm looking at specialists like Alpine etc

Windows system is Vista home basic (don't laugh) but want to go up to W7

I should point out that it will be used as a home PC as well.

Sorry I can't be more specific.

Best, Geoff

Let me check out the sites you have chosen, but the two most important things are

1. The operating system (Windows)

2. The CPU (chip)

Then you can compare

Hi Geoff!

As well as the suppliers you listed, you may wish to consider Overclockers. I have bought all the bits from them for my last two home builds and they have been helpful, and their prices are good. I appreciate you want to buy a an already-built box, so take a look here: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/productlist.php?groupid=43&catid=2475 and compare specifications and prices. If you have definite ideas then they are always prepared to change some of the components if you chat to them.

The usual recommendation for an fsx-only (or mainly) machine is to forget about i7 chips with hyperthreading since fsx doesn't use it, and instead go for an overclocked i5 (and spend the money you saved on a decent graphics card).    ;)   Overclockers provide i5 machines ready-overclocked to around 4.5GHz: remember, though, that if you subsequently add more memory cards that may well invalidate their overclock and you'll have to re-do it — something which came a surprise to a friend of mine.....    :whis:    And, of course, always go for the 64-bit version of Windows 7: PMDG, for example, refuse to support their aircraft on Windows 8, and will only start to consider doing so when 8.1 comes out.....

But I'll leave you in James's capable hands.   :)

Have fun!

Cheers,

Bruce / Brian too

Geoff (hifly),

Have a look at the pc specialist web site:

http://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/

They will build a desktop or laptop 'off the shelf' or to your specifications with a huge number of options, e.g. with or without graphics card at a price less than that of the individual components.

Their website is extremely well designed, catering for beginners or experienced computer hardware customers.

Ray.

having visited patrico yesterday i would say lenovo deserve a look but a word of warning most new p.c's come loaded with win 8 ---------unless you spec otherwise and whatever you get make sure it has the 64bit installed as some buggers give you no choice

Brian/Bruce was right with Overclockers, I had forgotten them and they are one of the best.

This looks a good buy I have added added Graphics card and windows 7 ultimate in the selector.

see un der bundles: linc  http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=FS-247-OE

I think all would agree that this combination is great.  I selected the win7 ultimate as that is considered the best windows to date.

This will give you a overclocked ready to 4.4 and the 2 year warranty.  Overclockers are great to talk to also.  But don't let them talk you into something you do not need.

The saving on money with this rig allows you to buy other stuff..

But please remember at the end of the day it must be your choice of what you get, as you have to be happy with the end result.

You could add another drive on the selector or you can change the 500 to a 1TB.  Good luck and let us know, or hang on until after Cosworth when you have chatted to any of us
