Win 8.1 the solution to ctd's? eventually !

Recommended Posts

and possibly win 8 as well

i have had awful problems with fsx not working in win 8.1 one could not fly for 5 minutes without a ctd , no matter how you set the sliders or the lod radius etc

Personally it was not mission critical because i use fsx with win7 on 3 hard drives therefore i only play with win 8.1 for the moment because i believe one day we will have to migrate to it

the solution for my system was to right click on the fsx exe in windows explorer and open fsx exe properties then open the page compatibility  tick compatibility mode box and select windows 7 also in case you havent already tick the box run as administrator on the same page, click apply and ok and consider the job done  !

and everything is much faster too!!

...tick compatibility mode box and select windows 7...

That's one more item on the list of reasons why we need a new simulator that is more fully compatible with current hardware and software.  FSX has some life in it yet and the add-on developers have done great things to keep it fresh and new and to add new functionality.  Having said that, however, I think they are getting to the end of that rope.  P3D or something else is going to be our way forward.  Most of the blood has been squeezed from the FSX turnip and the developer has no interest in improving it. Someone else will fill the void.

I dont disagree with you John, when you look at the graphics on some of the new games they are simply stunning, however having spoken to a few large companies in the course of writing reviews they are of the opinion that fsx has at least 3 years to run if not 5 before development MAY tail off.

And when you look at what we currently have with caronado, pmdg, aerosoft and loads of others combined with the latest photosceneries what remains of the original fsx is very much behind the scenes.

Many are holding out for P3D but you know, if it happens it happens, but call me a suspicious old fart, but something there for me isnt right, i do hope i am wrong but if they are going to be serious they have to go 64 bit and announce to the world that is their intention, and beat the baying masses into a feeding frenzy, for the new arrival, but they are not, not even for version 2  although Avsim is trying to instill interest with its current articles that are a year out of date (about right for them)

I'd be surprised if Britfrog's beast was ever tamed by a flight sim anytime soon! With the rate of change in electronics, I think the computers will always be there, just they might drift in and out of the sweetspot price-wise.

Have now sorted the teething problems, all seems to be working well albeit with not a lot installed however if it works with ftx england and a few airports it will work with most things even though at times over London I was down to 11 0r 12 fps. the main problem was i had installed an older version of fsuipc.dll and now i have the latest and things seem pretty good, even the clouds look much better (fluffier and more solid) and I have yet to install rex.

I am still going to reduce the services that windows uses and I dont so I can get a bit more space for fsx to use but for the moment all seems pretty good
