When was the last time you did an Image Backup ?

Recommended Posts

Thank heavens for Image Restore, and the fact that years of being an anal(yst) taught me to keep a clean backup and take notes of everything I install ....

Got sick and tired of error messages, missing c++files and all sorts of 'remnants' of badly deinstalled software, im going back in time. At least this time I wont repeat my past mistakes....but shame I have to reinstall all my Orbx, Return to Misty Moorings and hours worth of Windows updates :-(

Just thought it was worth voicing.... its so easy to forget to backup and always keep a 'good copy' of everything. Once the pc has finished reinstalling the image I'll have 2 ssds and my TB drive back to a good place and notes of everything I need to put back on

Great advice Steph, it seems such a chore at the time but a blessing when you rely on it to bring your PC back to life.

Does any one have any experiences or programs they would like to share/suggest?

Payware, Acronis can not be faulted. Especially where Multi HDD systems are concerned.

A very nice and easy to use, free program, is AOMEI Backupper.  Very good if you want a simple quick way to perhaps upgrade your C: drive by making a clone...so simple it is almost silly and without all the in depth clutter of Acronis.

Just an after thought....some instructions:-  http://tech2.in.com/how-to/windows/how-to-upgrade-your-hard-drive-by-simply-cloning-it/872668

Can vouch for the Acronis Image Restore software - very easy to use and can save hours of Microsoft/FSX rebuilds and re-configuring!

See my posting elsewhere in this forum:

I have the OCZ SSD upgrade kit (for £20 or less) which includes the Acronis True Image software, an external USB2 2.5" drive enclosure & sata 3 data cable for adding another drive to your motherboard.

Also have the 'laplink DiskImage" software which I've not used yet, but claims to not only recover your existing system, but also transfer an old system image onto a new PC with a different cpu &/or operating system.

Bret,

In my experience, copying a c: drive using the windows copy function does not copy all of the windows files or its registry. Bill Gates didn't get so wealthy without preventing easy cloning of his company's software!

I'm sure that Microftsoft/Apple lawyers and all would be banning disk imaging software if they could, but the very concept of disk imaging software pre-dates most operating systems in current use by many years.

Morning all

Was out on the raz last night and have just caught up with this thread..

I had a copy of Acronis way back and found it pretty good, apart when it came to upgrade it; the upgrade was as much as a brand new new copy. I thought tosh to that and looked into Norton Ghost but in the end I went for just using Image Backup on W7, to keep me going till I found something else..that was 3 yrs ago!

I have an Image of all 3 drives (os, fsx and my aircraft hangar on a 3rd drive) saved as one file on a totally separate partition and backed up on an external HD as well. It works fine as long as I remember to keep the fsuipc, rewards and favourites files etc. before I wipe and restore.

Its certainly not a foolproof solution and although it only took me about an hour yesterday to restore my image, I definitely think I need something better. Am definitely liking the idea of Laplink although Im not sure how it would work given that I have OEM W7. Bit of analysis to be done methinks..

Happy Sunday all! :-)
