britfrog 180
it seems the guys at REX are not just sitting on their laurels having produced the best, most complete weather program which includes textures. they are now working on a big upgrade REX 4 which will incorporate not only dx10 but dx11 rendering!! check out the screenshots they are amazing they are currently making a new website so this will have to do for now see this link http://www.rexdirectexperience.com/
jaydor 345
It's like a London bus with all these releases of weather programs, they all appear at once, they all claim to be the best. So the question is, do I need an umbrella today?
britfrog 180
looking at the weather map of today I think you might no doubt rex has made this announcement before the prog is ready to release to steal some of the others thunder. However there does seem to be a lot of negative posts on the latest ASN release many dont seem to be able to get the prog to work at all, no doubt they will get it sussed. It is interesting how protective some people are about "their" weather prog I used to use the hifi prog before coming to rex when it was launched , i have also tried opus and pilots and to be honest if you take the interface out of the equation, IMHO there is little difference between them , the newer progs are better with fogs and a few small details but then they get leapfrogged by the next release on the block. It appears sadly that REX4 will be an altogether new product so we shall have to dip our hands into our pockets again, i suppose we cannot really complain though it has been free for the last 4 years. stu7708 244
Looks great.. and as you say, considering that the last 2 new versions have been free for existing users one can't really complain about having to pay for it... and that is even more true since it looks like there will be a "cheaper" upgrade licence too... jaydor 345
I will admit to being a REX lover as I have REX2 and just use FSX own real weather update with it and I am very satisfied. I did not bother with the upgrades as I was happy with the REX2 original. But I have looked at ASN, but if REX are coming up with a new one then that is the most logical one for me. I would like to wonder that the news undercover will be something extraordinary to the rest of the bunch. Good posting Nigel, thanks for the attention wakeup..
mutley 4,498
Having purchased REX4, if you have REX Essential Plus then give REX 4 a miss, you'll be wasting your money, IMO the textures will probably only look better if you are running DX11 via P3Dv2. Keep REXe+ for the textures and get ASN for for the Wx. / Cheers, Joe
britfrog 180
Joe , I dont necessarily agree with you here, rex4 IMHO does give noticeably better clouds and seas than essential and the fog is much better as well, I presume as always you were a beta tester so have had access to it for a while now , however it does seem to have been released with an incomplete set of textures, there are many gaps in the themes and the choice of clouds is quite small compared to essential but what you do get is better than essential. I much prefer it and have disarmed my essential textures and now only use the weather engine, which will also be put aside when the new weather engine arrives. I suppose the proof of the pudding will be to use 4 for a few more weeks then go back to using essential for a bit and see what difference one perceives. I do however agree with you (and I dont have it yet) that there is much more potential if you use it with p3dv2 (with dx11) but I wont make that jump before i can use all my existing planes and scenery in p3d and that includes the pmdg ngx. mutley 4,498
I can only figure that I have something not set correctly, so I making sure everything is correctly installed. I am going to give it a while to see if anything comes out in the forums. The texture loading seems impossible fast to me but it does day they were successfully installed. I left the beta team after REX Essential + OD was released so have had no prior use of this one.
britfrog 180
I find the typical uk weather better represented ie dark cloud at say 6k followed by fluffier stuff (technical term) as you climb, clouds appear denser and stay dense close up as well. however if you are using the essential as a weather engine what you have to do is stop it installing the essential textures so what I have done is unticked all the options in essential so that when you hit go flying now you simply tell the small tag that comes up to install textures to cancel I know they say rex cannot install textures if fsx is running but i rather not take the chance
mutley 4,498
I had a quick blast in P3Dv2 and the DX11 textures with HD were pretty impressive so it does have a long term future as more addons are converted/ made available for the sim. Pretty happy with it now
