This time it's airports requiring two plates. I haven't seen one in weeks, then had one last night and two of the three today. It's not as if they are bunched up on a list. I'm pulling from four lists in a strict rotation and each of those lists of airports is from a different source and each has been individually randomized. Having reached 2,500 airports diagrammed by the end of 2013, I've been thinking of a goal for 2014. At an average of 2.5 new airports per day it doesn't seem like adding a thousand for the year is far out of reach. Nine hundred should be a walk in the park. I'm going to stop short of making it a commitment or a New Year's resolution, but it's something to keep in mind. KNKX is Miramar MCAS, formerly Miramar NAS, where much of the movie "Top Gun" took place and was filmed. It was, at that time, home of the USN Fighter Weapons School, otherwise known as Top Gun. This diagram went to two plates because of the numerous taxiway labels. I wanted to leave the main view uncluttered. ESSV is one I've flown out from many times in real life. I spent 4 years in college in Visby, and back then it was possible to get very cheap stand-by tickets for students. And when the alternative was to spend 5 hours on a ferry and another 1.5 hours on a bus and a train the risk of not getting a seat on the flight was one worth taking. allardjd 1,853 Posted January 20, 2014 Author Report Share Posted January 20, 2014 I always enjoy hearing that one of the airport diagrams I post makes some kind personal connection for someone, either in the FS or the real world. When not working from a request list, I pull airports from several randomized lists of airports from different sources. All of them are lined up in a text file with about 29,000 lines. There is, of course, a lot of duplication between the various lists. When I do an airport, I mark all occurrences in the file as "Done", but leave them in the file. It's kind of fun watching the blanks slowly fill in. I never look ahead, so never know today which airports I'll be diagramming tomorrow, unless, of course, I'm working someone's request list. I have written criteria for what makes an airport worthy of a diagram, though they make for a pretty low threshold. Basically, to be beneath consideration pretty much requires a single unpaved strip with no facilities or buildings of any kind - it's surprising how many of those there are in FSX, but plenty of the other kind too. I think this may be the first two-plate update, but not 100% sure of that. KDAY was originally diagrammed in February of 2010. The other three airports, all new ones, are somewhat smaller and are all single platers. LL60 was in my lists as LL0D (with a zero) and turned out to be an Israeli air base. It's known as LL0D in FS9 but the FSX version is LL60. Not sure how I missed Mildenhall before now. (Don't you love the ICAO code? It's almost as good as Lakenheath which normally has a strong US contingent present - look that one up with that in mind.) I thought I had pretty well covered the main RAF bases but that one somehow slipped through the cracks until now. It was a two-plater in the earlier incarnation but this time it went to three plates. I'm reasonably pleased with the way it rendered this time around. For the first time I have the shape of the terminal building (circa 2006) properly rendered - it's probably different again by now. It's one of the many ways the City of Chicago keeps taxpayer money flowing to the construction companies who are generous with campaign contributions. I've never heard of any of the new airports - in the case of DRZR I'd barely heard of the country. There was already one airport in Niger done before this one, however. The national capitals list that I did a year or so ago roped in one from each country. Nothing much to comment on. Tuscaloosa Regl in Alabama required two plates because of extensive taxiway labels. The French update has a couple of closed runways (of four total), a grass one and another stuck on the end of one of the non-closed one. It's a pretty weird layout. The Norwegian one, ENCN, has a couple of taxiways that should be labeled but aren't - it's that way in FSX and I don't ad lib on that kind of thing. All are two-runway airfields except KRCA and since their single runway is about 13,500' X 300 feet I don't guess they are blushing any or suffering from pavement envy. FAWK (love the ICAO code) in South Africa and KRCA in Rapid City SD are both airbases. KHGR in Hagerstown has, in the SE quadrant of the field, a decent sized apron with a very large, custom building. I take this to be a freight ramp, but not completely certain. Updates are suspended until I work through this list. Someone's having a fly in and these are the airports on their route. Most are on the small side and three of the six would not have made the cut to be diagrammed except by virtue of being on a request list and part of an event. Those go quickly, however and the other three are more worthy. Note the runway stats on 2WA1 - 2,335' X 20'. Not a good place for a crosswind. There was a nice spike in the downloads counter today - 20 in a day. Haven't figured out yet what's happening but am happy to see it.
