win 8.1 VAS saga

Recommended Posts

as many of you know i have been "playing " with 8.1 under the presumption that one day we will have to use it, unless like vista it is replaced with something better/more popular, (windows blue??)

So I setup a situ using the QW146 . ftx england and southampton and a flight to thiefrow via biggin

upon the startup the VAS was already at 2300mb and by the time i took off it had reached 2500, by the time i reached biggin it was at 2700 and when i turned onto the ILS for 27R it was at 2900

on the ILS it rose to 3200 followed by a lack of memory message and ctd as no doubt the remaining 800mb were being used by other processes

rebooting to a win 7 drive i set up again ftx soton and the QW146 , but used generation x south of england photoscenery and uk2000 heathrow

on start up the VAS was at 1600 and gently raised to 1800 by the time i arrived on the 28R ils, and by the time I arrived at heathrow it had risen to 1900, so leaving a lot of overhead for other things

food for thought eh?

Well, i was trying FSX in W8 and now i'm in W8.1 64bits. Not sure how others are doing it (saw some info that FSX runs perfectly in W8.1), but for me its working only in Dx10 mode. In Dx9 i got crashes, stopped working, not responding and whatnot. In DX10 its smooth and stable with nice sharp image. I got some ugly artifacts (trees reaching in the sky, black walls etc.) after ~2h of flying. After i installed the last ATI driver the artifacts still pops up sometimes, but they go away (still testing on this). Not sure about the artifacts, maybe the reason is that i have an ATI HD7770 card. Nothing overheats, the GPU is at 50-55 C, the proc is at 45 C max and there is still free memory to use. I was remembering something about a USERVA setting, but found out that is not helping/needed on 64 bit systems.

FTX England along with Southampton are really heavy on VAS. I've seen countless OOM's whist flying around the south east and coupling that with UK2000's EGLL just makes things worse. It's what prompted me to try the DX10 fixer to help with the VAS situation, and it helps, but it's still possible to run into an OOM. I'll get some figures to compare with yours later. It'll be from my win 7 64bit setup.

Best wishes,

Jess B

When I knew win8 was due to be released I invested in 2 copies of win7 ultimate (so glad I did).  I always build my own rigs and had heard of the forthcoming  problems of win8.

So I am using win7/ult on my 2 new rigs.  But to aid matters of OOM's and CTD's I have increased my virtual memory to the recommended 6060MB on the main drive and 20mb on each other drive.

Also I am using the latest up to date UIAutomationCore.dll found elsewhere on the forum.  The one now available is the correct one, as used by the Aces team when building FSX.

Result = I am not seeing any problems and have a very smooth FSX..

hi james my win 7 ftx's are running just fine as well , however being a curious sod, i want to find out if win 8.1 can run fsx, i have been trying it again  today using dx10 with the same results you can see that it isnt flushing the memory , so i have officailly binned it as far as fsx is concerned. It may be that my win8.1 pro installation might be corrupted in some small way but as i only paid 28 euros for it and they now want nearly 200 euros for it, it doesnt matter.

In actual fact statistically vista was a load more popular than win8 is so that has to say something.

windows blue is rumoured to be replacing win 8 whether that will be released as 8.2 with the start button resurrected only time will tell but I fancy MS will release the next one with a different name as the win8 name has lost favour with the public, much as Vista was replaced by 7

With so much negative in the FSX community in regards to win8 I do not know any better outcome other than to use win7 64bit.  At least you get the added bonus of 64bit if selected, over going all the way back to Vista.

All the way back to Vista? I'm still running XP!!!

Cheers for testing it Brett, You've reinforced my decision to put W7 on the system I'm in the middle of building instead of W8 :thum:

You will be glad to use win7, go for the 64bit selection.

You would have spent 2014 crying if you had gone the win8 route.

Credit where credit is due, britfrog(Nigel) did the testing

Thanks Brett, because I believe that someday we will need to progress from Win7 i had hoped that win8 would not be a complicated step, however unless there is some radical upgrade to 8 i will not waste any further time with it
