As far as I can see there was only the one. the one shown is Piper Cub, DG667, of No. 651 (AOP) Squadron RAF. This aircraft was formerly G-AFXS on the civil register, and was impressed for service in February 1941.

 

AOP means Air Observation Post, so the aircraft would be an artillery spotter.  In 1943 most of the AOP aircraft were Austers, a British aircraft that was very similar to the cub

Thanks for the info. :thum: I didn't find anything on what they were used for, so that's great. Not a job for the faint of heart I'm sure. :D  

 

After I asked you the above, I took a look for myself, this fella says that he knows of around 15 Grasshoppers based out of Larkhill, just in case you were interested. I see the above civil reg# on it. Also found your above picture on the IWM site.

 

Amazing war to find history about, interesting technical advances to explore, mixed with so many personal sacrifices that touch the heart strings.
