DOVETAIL GAMES & FLIGHT1 SOFTWARE PARTNER FOR FSX LAUNCH ON STEAM

Flight1 to bring FSX add-ons to Steam launch

Chatham, UK - 25th July 2014 Following the recent announcement that Dovetail Games has acquired the rights to distribute the multi-award winning Microsoft Flight Simulator X: Gold Edition via Valve’s popular digital retail channel Steam, the company is pleased to announce that it will be working in partnership with Flight1 for the launch.  A developer and publisher of flight simulation content, Flight1 is best known for its extensive range of add-ons for various editions of Microsoft Flight Simulator titles.  As part of this agreement, Flight1 will be delivering a range of add-ons for the forthcoming Microsoft Flight Simulator X: Steam Edition.

In addition, this partnership will see Dovetail Games distributing a range of selected Flight1 titles via Steam on an ongoing basis.

Steve Bainbridge, COO at Dovetail Games said, “We are very pleased to be working in conjunction with Flight1.  They are highly experienced in creating quality content that supports Microsoft’s Flight Simulator series and we are looking forward to working together to help Microsoft Flight Simulator X: Steam Edition realise its full potential.”

Mungo Leir, Managing Director of Flight1 Europe added, “I am delighted that Flight1 is working with Dovetail Games. Dovetail’s vision for Flight Simulator is good news for the flight sim community in all sorts of ways. We’re very excited.”

Not sure I understand what changes here.   You can buy FSX Gold on Amazon now for about $20.  Flight1 has been and continues to make some excellent add-ons for FSX.  It's also not clear to me whether Dovetail has access to the source code and/or the license to further develop FSX and if they do have that, whether they have any intention of improving it.  Obviously all this has piqued my interest but I am having a hard time so far seeing what, if anything, it all means to me.

I understand that up to now Dovetail has been mainly a railroad simulation shop and the recent deal with Microsoft got them MS's railroad simulator product to use as a base for their own development.  I'm kind of wondering if the FSX part of the deal wasn't just thrown in as a potential cash cow to sweeten the pot with no real plans or intention to develop it.

I don't read anything in the press release that indicates to me that anyone has any hard and fast plans to improve FSX except by the release of new add-ons.  Flight1 is a class act and I own and like a number of their products.  Still, having said all that, I'm not seeing anything here that offers a promise of the NGFS.  It looks to me as if Lockheed-Martin are still the only folks out there who are actively developing the MSFS-based simulation engine.

Am I missing something here?

I agree John,

and how is this team up with steam supposed to aid things? as far as I can see , and from what I hear Steam is a big turn off so that is a counteractive move, i for one would not touch them with a bargepole.

Steer clear of Steam is my advice, as Nigel knows, I had had some issues with their bloat wear before.

I suppose this will mean the end of DVD distribution for FSX, they will still need to keep the activation service alive for existing users, Steam have their own way of authentication.

More reason to focus on Prepar3D I think.

DVD packages for FSX Gold (with and without Acceleration) still seem to be available in quantity at reasonable prices on Amazon. If anyone is worried about the condition of his disks or otherwise feels the need to have an FSX insurance policy, this might be a good time to have a "safety copy" on the shelf.

Personally I have had no problem with Steam (or DTG for that matter). They have been talking about a new gaming engine for Train simulator 2014 (they are releasing TS2015 in September, I think with the new engine), so the experience of the former MSTS code and looking deeply in the FSX code could produce a new game. Interest of people buying FSX Gold (Steam) could persuade them to develop a new one. TS2014 is currently available as a disc, but requires Steam activation

One good thing about DTG is that they have continued to give the core update for free. I got the original Railworks in 2009, and have not needed to buy another thing from them regards game engine. True, since TS2012 they have started changing what is default (routes, assets and stock) and are changing it yet again for TS2015. That could cause problems for developers (as it has for TS devs). The cheapest way to get the new stuff is to buy the game again, but you can pick and choose as the induviual routes (with assets and stock) seperately. They also have regular sales.

In the long term, who knows what will happen. I can't imagine what kind of world could come with 'FS11' or what kind of stuff will come. With TS, I noticed the number of routes/assets/stock decrease in terms of default over the years, from 7 to 3 routes, so anything can happen

The Steam workshop can be a good idea, but I object to paying for a repaint that was originally in the pack before they re-released it!

Anyway, that was just my two cents from experience with Steam over about 5 years

I had Train Simulator 2014, Had to sign in to Steam. Every time I booted up and went online Steam updates for shoot em up games came up, couldn't switch the thing off. Peed me off so much I binned the train sim. :(

There is an option to 'Play Offline', although I can't quite remember where it is

Thanks Kieran, I tried everything to stop it. I should have been wary because of their lengthy terms & conditions. Don't like that type of pushy marketing.

Being a long time player of the "Total War" strategy games, using Steam activation, I had no problems whatsoever over the years. Most of the time I play offline (once Steam is launched, you go to "Steam" on left top corner and select "Go offline"). I only connect once or twice a month online to get any Steam client update. Nothing complicated imho.

But besides eventually bringing new users to FSX, being on Steam will not add anything for people already equipped with FSX.
