I am a great believer in the American phrase "there aint no such thing as a free lunch"

and the English phrase "beware of Greeks bearing gifts"

however it would appear that M.S. are going to give windows 10 away if you "convert" in the first year

their announcement goes :

Free Upgrade Offer

Great news! We will offer a free upgrade to Windows 10 for   qualified new or existing Windows 7, Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone 8.1 devices that upgrade in the first year!*  And even better: once a qualified Windows device is upgraded to Windows 10, we will continue to keep it up to date for the supported lifetime of the device, keeping it more secure, and introducing new features and functionality over time – for no additional charge. Sign up with your email today, and we will send you more information about Windows 10 and the upgrade offer in the coming months.

could be a case of slowly , slowly monkey catchee!

I am still running their latest Beta on one hard drive and have to say I still prefer win7

Still I suppose we shall have to all go with the flow.

im terrified thinking MS is doing a move like this

the sentence beware of Greeks bearing gifts; is screaming in my head with red underscores flashing

if it was anyone else, it would be considered as a promo move

since its MS; it’s so ridicules it’s not even a suspicion; convicted!

what are you afarid of MS?

Chris there is more to this than meets the eye, are they scared of Apples gains?

however every add on is payware and third parties need not apply, so perhaps they are expecting to catch the unaware like that?

Not only no, but NO FRIGGING WAY!!!

I've seen what they did with MS 8.  Talk about lock in.  I want my computer to do what I want it do, when I want it to do it.  I will install what I like, whenever I like, whereever I want.  I do not want another television which allows me to passively consume what the content providers shovel.

<sigh>

If it weren't for a strong gaming addiction MS products would have disappeared from my PCs long ago.

not sure what's the rant about Pete,

my win8.1 does exactly what i tell it, when i tell it

and it never downloads anything unless i tell it to

it's just a matter of knowing how to disable the crap MS pile's on

i got rid of metro and all of their apps with the help of

http://sourceforge.net/projects/windows8appremover/

i have a clean win8.1 with nice start button like I'm used to

http://startisback.com/

got my old TaskManager back

http://winaero.com/blog/how-to-restore-the-good-old-task-manager-in-windows-8/

i use Autoruns to remove pesky startup application

https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx

and CCleaner to keep my PC clean from time to time

https://www.piriform.com/ccleaner

FW is disabled, sys restore is disabled, security center is disabled completely; all security features are off,

sys update disabled, and i do not allow to check for solutions or updates online

Explorer has been removed, and replaced by Firefox

i don’t run AV of any kind or active FW; i keep safe with few browser plugins

AdBlock Plus

Flashblock

NO Google Analytics

redirect Cleaner

and... common sense

Interesting Chris, i also have win 8.1  and whilst I also have customised my desktop to look much like windows 7  it will not run fsx correctly , no way, it has a higher VAS signature than win7 thus reducing what one can run in fsx , sadly my pre beta version of win 10 is not that much more different to 8.1 , yes i will play with it and use it, but my fsx will be under win 7 for the foreseeable future.

As for antivirus/ internet protection i dont think you would last 5 minutes without one here in France perhaps europe with the amount of phishing and attempted back door entries that go on. but hey if your system does it for you , well done!

I say no we won't. At least not until we have to. I base that on all the negativity I've heard about add-on's and other stuff having issues with W8.

If it aint broke, don't fix it.
