IZ0JUB 162
I recently purchased FSX SE Steam, it takes well over 6 hours to download unless you have a super fast speed. After using it a few times you then find out that you have paid for software that was around in 2006. Also you have to be connected to the internet and sign into Steam before FSX will open. Steam also without warning will make regular updates to Steam NOT FSX. I am NOT happy with my purchase and have sent a message to Dovetail Games Ltd in the UK demanding my money back under the Sale of Goods Act. If you already have FSX from MS stick with it and forget the Steam version. I have uninstalled Steam and FSX SE from my computer and DO NOT want to see it again THANK YOU. If you make a Company Search of Dovetail Games Limited you will find that they have no cash, no net worth, no assets and no liabilities. All my communications with the company have been totally ignored.
britfrog 180
Interesting tale Mike, i also took advantage of their recent offer, only because Froogle reckoned it was far better than the disk version of FSX, however having used it and discussed it here on mutleys with others , one has to come to the conclusion that it is , as dovetail has explained, FSX with a few very minor mods. However it does draw into question why froogle is saying it is so much better than the disk version, and why we have to allow Steam to monitor all we do on our p.c like the es program i have deep reservations in allowing anyone, or their apparently innocent program , to have free access to my p.c. and i know others here have expressed the same concern. as for dovetail games who now have my c/c details , in the light of your research, maybe buying a simulator for 4.99 will cost us dear? wain 879
I had to get FSX-SE as I damaged my disk version and lots were charging horrendous sums of money for the disc version. I am happy with what I have, I already have lots of other Steam so I am used to the updates. I personally dont really thing there is any difference in perfomance, I saw Froogles blog but at the same time PCPilot who he writes for were saying the same so maybe he was toeing the company line. At the end of the day it works and I am able to fly, I also use P3D and have XP10 but I really cant seem to get on with that, but I really would like to. Wayne
Corsaire31 419
I downloaded it at the very beginning and it didn't take 6 hours for me, more something like 1 hour 1/2 ( and I have a simple 10Mb Adsl modem). I installed a few addons for testing, it all works fine, and overall I think for 5 Euros it was a good deal. I keep it on a separate disk in case I would have problems reinstalling FSX from the disks for any reason. I have been using Steam for years with other software ( like Total War series or Civilization 5 ), most of the time offline. I only connect once in a while for updates or adding new mods. You don't need to be online all the time to use it (although for FSX I am online anyway to have real time dynamic weather...)
hlminx 301
I purchased the FSX -SE last week on the back of the discounted offer but thankfully I used Paypal, and I've installed it on a totally separate drive in case I have to can it.. Haven't even started it up yet, but I never like programs having access to everything on my pc. Unfortunately in this day and age, with mobile apps and online programmes becoming more prevalent, its sadly a prerequisite to installing them. If I ever wanted to live 'off the grid', I'd never manage it in today's world. Although the lack of enhancements with FSX-SE over boxed isn't a major surprise, Froogle's glowing report of it is.. jaydor 345
I am with the boxed version of FSX gold and will stick to it until I am convinced that I need an upgrade and then I will go for P3D now that most software venders are supporting it. Can not see the sense of FSX Steam unless you are brand new to the hobby..
MyPC8MyBrain 273
I hope this isn’t inappropriate; I am speaking from the person not a commercial developer side, I never liked Steam’s approach; I don’t like anything that’s communicating with my machine without me initiating; Keep this in mind; Steam always marketed their software with this annoying application that had to stay open at all times when the game is on; Many years back; this client wasn’t so friendly to the local machine to begin with; On top their less than honest intension (not publicly stated); are far more then to just provide protection or secure DLC software; They used to have allot of spyware logic embedded in their client; constant statistic on what you do, when, and where; I find this too intrusive for my taste; I simply wrote them off many years ago and never looked back; today is no different, Beside all the marketing hype; it makes no sense to me supporting an additional; practically ghosted version of FSX with added annoyance, When Lockheed Martin is Developing Prepad3D all this time; and made far bigger progress to date, Beside the complete opposite pole orientation of both companies; Prepar3D gets my support! Corsaire31 419
I never liked Steam’s approach; I don’t like anything that’s communicating with my machine without me initiating; Keep this in mind; Steam always marketed their software with this annoying application that had to stay open at all times when the game is on; I'm not defending Steam in any way, I only installed it when it became mandatory for the strategy games I was playing. But this is a false statement, you don't have to run Steam online for playing. 90 % of the time I use it offline, and only connect to Steam when I decide it, to get an update or a mod for one of the games I'm using. I also have no intention to switch from FSX to P3D as long as it works on my PC. The 5 Euros I spent on FSX Steam are only to have a backup in case I couldn't reinstall from disks. Kind of a cheap insurance.
MyPC8MyBrain 273
good to see you Loic, even if only 10% of the games they sell still have to connect while playing; it makes my statement valid, this isn’t the only troublesome detail i brought up in regards Steam's policy, just one of them,
Corsaire31 419
Sorry for not being clear in my post, the point was that you never need to be connected to Steam online to play anything. You need to connect to install the games, and for any updates you wish to make. Just saying that Steam is always looking at what you're doing is not right. I'm neither Steam lover or Steam hater, it's only a tool I use when I need it. It's an easy way to have games patches up to date, and to install and manage mods. All the Steam installed games I have were never sold to me by Steam and always installed from disks ( last ones being Civilization V and Civilization Beyond Earth ) except for FSX SE ( I thought for 5 Euros paid with Paypal I didn't take many risks...)
