Is it me, or are the steam catapults more powerful these days and therefore shorter?

Not sure, but the new electric ones will be on the next set of carriers launched and they are supposedly better in all kinds of ways.  Nuclear carriers generally have plenty of MWs to spare.

They've been testing one set built into a runway at Patuxent River for some time now.

I heard about that. Linear motors I believe. Not sure if the linear motor version will provide a shorter takeoff run, but I recall they are supposed to be less stressful for the airframe, as it's graduated acceleration.

I guess the limiting factor in terms or takeoff length is the pilots G tolerance. 4G I think it is for an F18.

Cool videos Martin, a very nice find.

Too bad there are no carriers in use in the Swedish armed forces, a chance to serve on one of those could have convinced me to do my military service in the Navy rather than the Army where I ended up..

And that red test viechle in the second video could almost be used as a "close quarters" weapon... But I guess something did go very wrong if an enemy vessel got that close in the first place ;)

Great videos, I just wish they'd sort all the problems out and get the thing into regular service, at the moment it's still an overpriced white elephant! Re the red test car, I'd prefer it if it was a Vauxhall Corsa full of Chavs they were sending over the edge! ........or maybe a Japanese pick-up truck full of the black pajama gang! Those goat molesters could do with a bath!
