I seem to remember a program investigating this technology, after fears about privacy were raised. The program concluded that although it can 'look' through clothes and detect objects such as knives/bombs/guns, it could not remove the clothing layer and produce an image similar to that of a naked person

Mmmmm, what other reason is there to introduce these scanners? Surely you aren't suggesting an airport is investing thousands of dollars into technology, just so they can see through Women's clothing?
