Emergency Whisky run!

Recommended Posts

Got a frantic phone call in the hangar office at Wick late this evening, our friends had had a barn fire in Tingwall,Shetland and all the food and drink for the Hogmanay party had gone up in smoke. Could we help replenish the supplies as they had 20 guests arriving in the next few days!  No problem, I borrowed the company van , nipped outside the airfield to the 24 Hour Tesco superstore on the A99, then having stocked up there, popped down the road to the Old Pulteney Distillery and saw someone who owed me a favour. 12 crates of fine single malt later and we were back to the airport. Loaded all the goods into a trusty Cessna Caravan and after giving the tower a quick call we were off. It was a filthy night with gusting winds and heavy rain as we took off. I kept to below 2'000 ft and less than an hour later was on the ground at Tingwall. Aircraft unloaded and I spent the night on Shetland. Job done, party saved!

Nice job Al... I probably would have waited until daylight to make the delivery.

I've only recently begun to acquire a taste for hard alcohol, and generally prefer top shelf rum and Tequila ....but I have found a very nice single malt called Tomatin that is freaking delicious. On the other hand, I unfortunately discovered one called Laphroig that tastes like it was aged 10 years in a barrel made from planks recovered from an old sheep pen. Single malt must be kind of weird that way... When I pick up the tequila I am pretty certain it will taste like tequila, I suspect now that if I pick up a single malt I have no idea what it will taste like.

Laphroig is excellent, as is Tomatin. Laphroig is an Islay malt and Tomatin is a Highland. I like the peaty tastes and one of my favourites is Highland Park from the Shetlands,(also classed as a Highland). Whilst on holiday in August we had a tour round the Glenmorangie distillery on the Dornoch estuary. That has a slightly sharper taste and is aged 10 years in Bourbon casks from Tennessee, they also produce some older ones that are a lot more expensive and they are aged other casks to give a unique flavour.  My wife never liked whisky until she tried the proper stuff, now she has come to appreciate the craftsmanship of a good single malt. We came home with half a suitcase full of it! Currently sipping a 14 year old Oban! Love it !  if you follow this link you can download a whisky map which tells you what comes from where.  http://www.scotch-whisky.org.uk/news-publications/publications/documents/the-world-of-scotch-whisky-map-2015/#.WF1ch1OLTcs
