1966 Batmobile. probably the most iconic screen car ever. Basically it was a highly modified Lincoln Futura prototype. The Lincoln never went into production but thanks to Batman it became one of the worlds most recognised vehicles. This one is a 1/25 scale kit by Polar Lights.

Holy Polar Lights Alan! That's a great job you have done there. Fantastic detail!

I also wondered how Batman managed to fit a jet engine into the Batmobile and the underside shot answers that question!

The nearest I have seen to a car with a jet engine was when I was working as a volunteer at the Brooklands museum.  Some guy turned up in a Rover SD1 with a Merlin engine in it. It had two seats , the driver and passenger sat in the rear of the cabin as the gearbox and a third of the engine took up the front half of the cabin. The Rover's large boot was all fuel tank.

The car did 4 miles to the gallon and would do 150 mph at 2000 revs.  Nuts!

When Rover designed the P6 model it was designed from the start to have a turbine engine as standard, however tests showed that although it was powerful when running pulling away was embarrassingly slow as the car suffered from severe turbo lag, it was also extremely thirsty and ultimately was abandoned, However the car was born as the Rover 2000, A great car which was eventually made even better when fitted with a lightweight 3500 cc V8 engine. The Rover V8 became one of Britains legendary cars. http://www.rover.org.nz/pages/jet/jet5.htm      1961-rover-t4-gas-turbine-car-AT5NWM.jpg

The Jet1 Rover is a lovely thing. Fun watching it on the track from the cockpit view. It made a few cars look like they were out for a Sunday Fun Ride (as some probably were :) ) while other cars did the same to it. :D

I think this short video demonstrates why it never took off as a car for public roads...they'd have to offer free earplugs to every citizen where they operated...maybe little roadside earplug dispensers every 100 meters or so along public streets. (Hear a Roover coming...take a pair! Courtesy of Rover).
