Consolidated PBY-5A Catalina 9767

Recommended Posts

Last month the Consolidated PBY-5A Catalina 9767 a previously payware plane was released as freeware and is now available for X-Plane 11 only on the org:  http://forums.x-plane.org/index.php?/files/file/38316-consolidated-pby-5a-catalina-9767

So I decided to take her up around New Plymouth for a test fly as well as play a bit with setting up X-Camera. I refactored by throttles for twin engines and was able to successfully use them in my taxi down the runway.

There are absolutely no flaps on her but those big engines got us to 85Kn pretty quickly.

I managed to find a nice scenery for NZNP on the org too.

She really feels like a big old bird too which is great!

Whilst the interior is not spectacular it is still very good and sets the feel when flying.

Decided on a water landing, but once again since there's no flaps it was a very different experience for me.

Engines off and anchor deployed.

@wain go pick this up man, it's incredible!

It's a bit disconcerting flying some of the older planes without landing flaps, but they tend to have pretty slow stall speeds and aren't usually an issue for them, most of my biplanes are without them, and one just Slows down...granted a big thing like the Catalina feels very odd without flaps, but she is a graceful cat and lands softly on her feet/belly.

Thanks for the look Beejay,:thum: they aren't the prettiest aircraft inside or out but they are great to fly and are just plane fun.

Ohh I don't know Brett, I'm finding myself more and more attracted to these old birds =)

I spoke to a Cat pilot once who told me:" flaps? We don't need flaps, we're so slow, our only worry is bird strikes...from the rear!"

Lovely shots of a lovely bird.
