Captain Coffee 2,030
Seems even a short hop in a C152 tuns into a tour and navigation challenge, especially around the mountains. I have started using Little Nav Map to plan routes and really love it's terrain height calculation feature to help me plan trips through the passes and stay within reasonable altitudes in this little VSI challenged birdy. I begin this flight at KVGT North Las Vegas. I'm in Airhauler of course, using the C152 as a starter plane in a Hardcore company ie...start at 20 reputation, with the value of a C172 in my wallet, buy a C152 with that, and have a few 10's of thousands of dollars left for fuel/base upgrades. :D...and a Long flight path ahead to a 40 reputation and my first pilot hires. For example, an aprox. 150 mile route (as a speedy bird flies directly) turned into a roughly 220 mile trip zig zagging through passes for my C152...fun fun...and used up almost 1/2 of its range as it transpired according to the tankage at the end. Up and away, and starting a long haul up to 7,000+ feet. Still gaining altitude over the Tule Springs Fossil Beds north of KVGT....and the reason for the long climb is apparent to my left, the direction I am working towards. Passing over KINS, Indian Springs Air Force Auxiliary airport... on the edge of the Area 51 airspace and shortly before my main left turn. Scaling the ridges before Death Valley. Death Valley, it makes my little 'sparrowhawk' seem like a high altitude falcon, even though the ground merely dropped out from below it's wings... Approaching Owen's lake, and a painful history lesson ahead... A reminder of a shameful and currently very relevant part of America's history regarding immigrants, the Manzanar Concentration Camp north of Lake Owens, one of the best known of the 10 camps around the USA during WWII where US citizens of Japanese descent were imprisoned after all their possessions were seized by a paranoid government. They were torn from their homes and their businesses and lives destroyed. Good american people imprisoned out of paranoia without any actual crimes being committed, yet they were never adequately reimbursed or recompensed for the injustice they received at the hands of "The Greatest Democracy on Earth"....a reminder of how easily a terrified population can be made to ignore the crimes (and the cherished principles) of their own government...as if Nazi Germany whom we were fighting at the time wasn't example enough??? Approaching the town of Bishop ahead. Parked up at Bishop-KBIH. My trusty 'Sparrowhawk' awaits tomorrow's further adventures north back to my Vacaville, Ca home base, weather permitting. Thanks for flying along. Coff. Edited December 21, 2017 by Captain Coffee
