question regarding target speed

Recommended Posts

Hi folks,

just seen on the result table that for example the Comanche got a set target speed of 140 kts for all pilots flying the Comanche. I was using slightly higher power settings with 22 over 22 in my testflight and my fellow copilots 20 over 20 resulting in me beeing slightly faster than them. I've done my first two flights now without noticing the target speed. So do I have to adjust my speed down to the overall set target speed of the Comanche to stay in the limits?

Cheers and thanks

Thorsten

Thorsten,

As per the Rules for this year’s MEBAR, aircraft are allocated to an Aircraft Category based on the performance characteristics of the aircraft and the submitted Test Flight time. Aircraft Categories are then allocated a target speed for the event.

You must fly the Flight Legs using the Target Speed.

Cheers

Andrew

Hi Thorsten

We have done a lot of work this year to establish typical cruise speeds per aircraft model and type, so all Commanche's will have the same cruise target speeds. The purpose of the test flight is to confirm your average test flight time is within the envelope for the aircraft, and we have had to confirm with a few pilots that they were using a reasonably economical cruise speed rather than flying as fast as they can, as this is not a race!

So please use our target speed as the cruise speed for your flight, this will put you on a level playing field as your fellow pilots. So it's all down to planning for the flight, establishing the initial altitude and then on to your planned altitude, cruise altitude and speed, circuit, approach and landing.

Hope that helps.

Joe

EDIT: Whoops writing this post when Andrew had answered :)

Andrew,

I did read the rules, but that part must have slipped my memory, sorry. :th_blush:

No need to be sorry for asking a question Neil, there's a lot to read there. Ground Speed is your best friend in these rally's and should be noted during the test flight and replicated during the cruise phase of each leg. It's why checking the weather is so important.

Excepting that the ground speed in the Test Flight has no bearing on the ground speed the Flight Legs are flown. The ground speed to be maintained on the Flight Legs is that associated with the allocated Aircraft Category.

Let’s be sure that any advice offered is clear and unambiguous, and consistent with the Rules.

It has obviously been changed this year and I apologize to Neil for my misleading statement.

I would ask why have a test flight then if that is not the information being used.

Again, reading the Rules will provide you your answer. And again the very same Paragraph 7 to be exact!

“Seek and you shall find, read and you will understand”.
