WHY???? I am frustrated!

When I upgraded to Vista Ultimate 32bit, I used to get 30FPS maxed out in FS9. Now something has happened and I only get 6FPS with the default Cessna, even when I have the worst settings selected!!

Your help would be much appreciated

Have you tried re-installing FS and all of your addons?

Try uninstalling it completely (ie unintall the program and all the folders then restart) and try reinstall it again. No-one likes doing it but sometimes it's the only option

First of all check to make sure it's not a hardware issue, it may just be coincidence that it started when you installed Vista.

Check your CPU temp in the BIOS, it's in the PC health section.

While your delving into the BIOS, check your case temperatures and fan speeds.

I don't know how competent with computers you are but it's worth having a look inside to make sure everything is okay with the fans.

Are your case fans running okay and if there is a fan on the motherboard north bridge check that it’s running.

It's possible that the CPU is overheating and throttled back to avoid damage.

Don't forget that excessive dust on the CPU cooler can be an issue leading to overheating.

If temps look okay and your GPU fan is running, then try some basic maintenance, delete all unnecessary programs, defrag the hard drive, twice on the trot if necessary and then install all the latest drivers.

Another hardware related possibility id a PSU problem.

If you are convinced it is related to Vista then perhaps t others have experienced this, perhaps you can do a search on the net.

I don’t know much about Vista so check that specific drivers aren’t required for your hardware.

Oh dear that's not good news, I was almost going to but Vista home premium from Amazon but for some reason cannot quite hit the purchase button as XP Pro is running ok :sadblinky:

Funny thing is, I noticed the other day that my CPU temp on my simming machine has gone up five degrees at idle.

I'm wondering if I need to dive in there and clean out some dust.

I was intending to do it this morning but I went to Argos and bought a cordless phone instead, to plug into my BT Home Hub for Internet calls BT Talk and all that. Free calls to land lines at weekends and evenings, sane rate as a land line for mobiles or for calls outside those times. I went for the BT Freestyle 310.

I need an extra socket by my downstairs comp though so that’s another job to do.

Tell me more... I'm having similar symptoms and the PC seems warmer than I recall in the past. At times FS9 is just barely usable and I often have to "throttle back" on the traffic setting.

Do you access the BIOS by interrupting the boot process? I know there's some hot-key info on a screen that shows up briefly during a cold boot, but have never had any reason to explore it.

I downloaded Speedfan and, Oh my God!, the CPU temp is 59C!!

I am turning the PC now and I'll tell you in an hour or so when the CPU is ''cold'' if this was my problem

Press delete during boot up, before the POST bleep. Sometimes it's a good idea to keep pressing it in case you miss it, it's a narrow window of opportunity.

As for 69 degrees, that is very high if it's at idle, sometimes under load the Intel Prescott can exceed that, so is it at idle or under load???

Check that your CPU fan is running and the heat sink fins aren't all clogged up with dust and stuff you’ll probably find your cats entire fur coat stuck to it. :rofl

What happens if your CPU is overheating is that it cuts back its CPU cycles to prevent damage from overheating, hence your considerable reduction in frames per second.

If that’s at idle, then it's definitely your problem.

To be sure Speed fan is telling the truth, reboot your PC and press delete before the bleep from the POST check, keep pressing it if you like until the BIOS screen appears.

Go to PC health and check the temp at idle.

That may not be too bad actually. Is this an Intel socket 775, Prescott? P550 or P650?

If so, the Prescott does run very hot and typically idles at 40 degrees, sometimes hotter than that.

Give us your specs.

The PC I’m using at the moment has a Prescott and it’s currently idling at 50 degrees.

As I say, not unusual for this CPU.

49 is normal at idle with the stock cooler.

Don't know, but I don't think it's your CPU temperature.

Have you checked all of the other things I suggested?

Like the fan on your graphics card, like the fan on your motherboard north bridge (if you have one there) like defragging your drive, like updating all drivers.

Any weird smells like burning from your PSU although this is usually the last stage before failure.

Are there any updates to Vista?

Are there any drivers you require to make your system compatible with Vista? I wouldn't know, I'm quite happy with XP.

Unfortunately diagnosing these things is very difficult, often trial and error, the same symptom can be caused by numerous causes.

It could be something simple or something more serious, without having the PC in front of me and having a detailed report of what has and hasn’t been eliminated as a cause, it’s impossible to say for sure.

What motherboard do you have for example, is there some kind of incompatibility there, does it require a BIOS update.

What temperature does your GPU run at. Do you see any artefacts on screen when you play games, have you overclocked.

As you can see there are a myriad of variables.
