Explain this...

Recommended Posts

I've had some major FSX problems over the last couple of weeks, which have lead to me having to do a full uninstall/reinstall of FSX and everything FSX related. So tonight I come to installing some things from DVD's (original boxed copies) and for some reason the DVD's wont load, so I right click on d: and explore. Windows proceeds for a long time to try and search and I eventually get the blue screen of death. This leads me to think the DVD player is kaput. After loading windows back up I insert the DVD again and it wont fire into life, I then insert a CD and that works. Then I put the DVD back in and it fires into life and proceeds to install.

I'm a little confused as to if this is a blip or should I be looking to replace the DVD player?

That sounds bizarre Rob, so the DVD worked after loading a CD after re-starting Windows?

Could be something wrong with the DVD driver, difficult to know what, maybe something you have loaded in the past has corrupted it.

Quite strange. I had a sort of similar problem with my laptop a while ago. It had certain DVDs that it "liked" and some that it didn't. With the ones that it didn't like, it just completely jammed the drive, I couldn't remove and it would lead to the software running the DVD to not respond and then I had to restart the system to get the disc out. The thing thats different with yours though is that sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. My problem was slightly different in the way that it always worked on some and never worked on others. The laptop was still in warranty so I just got the drive replaced, which ended the problem.

So... replacing the drive could fix the problem, but I can't really say. I would second what Joe said about corrupting though - that does seem possible.

Cheers,

George

Very strange indeed.. if you know the brand of the DVD-player it could be worth checking if there is a new firmware for it..

Also, if you have deamon tools, or any other program for mounting DVD/CD-image files that run some form of SecuROM/SafeDisc emulation it could be possible thats causing the problem. Try disabling the emultaions, or closing down the program before putting the DVD in your reader.

I have had similar problems with DVD:s caused by deamon tools, but never to the point of a BOD. But they went away with emulation turned of.

Don't waste any more time, Rob - just nip down to Currys/PC-World/whotever and get a new drive - same happened to me some 6 months ago - it was the old drive that dun it!

Cheers - Dai.

  • 4 weeks later...

And the problem is solved!

The DVD drive was working this morning, but there was no sign of life this afternoon. Even when I pushed in the eject button thingy with a paperclip nothing happened. Opened the case and the lead going into the back of the DVD Drive had come half out. A little nudge and it came fully out. It looks as though the PC manufacturers had tightened the cable ties too much so the lead was being pulled out. Took off the cable ties and put new ones on, but a bit looser, plugged in the lead and hey presto!

Good job too as i've got the full FTX DVD Add-on coming soon!
