Il-2 Sturmovik: Birds of Prey

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone,

I haven't been active too much recently on the Mutley's Hangar forums so a big hello to everyone again! :stars:

Over the past couple of weeks, I've been playing a game called 'Il-2 Sturmovik: Birds of Prey' which is a military flight simulator game based on WW2 in Europe. "Take to the skies to turn the tide of the Second World War, engaging in history's most iconic airborne missions. Battle for supremacy over stunning landscapes, from the patchwork fields of Southern England to the smoking ruins of Stalingrad."

The main campaign for the game covers...

- The Battle of Britain

- The Battle of Stalingrad

- The Invasion of Sicily

- The Battle of the Korsun Pocket

- The Battle of the Bulge

- The Battle of Berlin

There are three dificulties from which you can choose depending on how experienced/familiar you are with flight simulators (although I must say a lot of the skill is in combat not just in flying!). These difficulties are: Arcade, which is just ridiculously easy. Realistic, which brings more physics into play such as stalls, flaps etc. And then the final difficulty is Simulator, which is pretty much the same as realistic but it forces you to use the in-cockpit view.

As you complete more of the campaign, you will get the opportunity to use a larger variety of aircraft and then these aircraft that you unlock can be used in other aspects of the game such as online play.

Wow, this looks like good fun... shame I don't have any of those consoles...

no need for a console Phil, check this out...

Its called Storm Of War: Battle Of Britain, its by the world renowned 1C company who brought us the awesome IL2 series and is being produced by none other than IL2's very own Oleg Maddox. I'm sure you've heard of it already, and if not you should either drag yourself out of the cockpit more often and visit the big Flight Sim sites more regularly!

Storm of War: Battle Of Britain (hence referred to as SOW: BoB) has been in the in the making since 2004 and IL2: Pacific Fighters hit our shelves and was due for release in the summer of 2006, but Oleg denied publisher Ubi Soft that opportunity and said it wasn't ready! He's completely rebuilt the game engine, the effects and atmosphere are truly outstanding as you'll see from the below videos....and, finally, Oleg is pretty darn near happy with it to be released in Beta (now on version 2.1) for an October 2010 release.

Oleg Maddox is one of the very few guys in the world who must be dragged kicking and screaming onto the staff of whatever organization takes it upon themselves to write the next version of FS, regardless of what it's named and who publishes it. The man probably knows more than any other about what it takes to make make virtual aircraft and a virtual environment look and behave realistically. He's a genius and they should pay him whatever it takes to bring him aboard. Are you listening, Aerosoft?
