I've dug these blank textures out so you can have a go at the default aircraft in FS9 and FSX, so c'mon, it's really not that hard!

FS9:

Single file containing blank textures for the default Cessna 172, Cessna 182, Beech Baron, Beech King Air and the Mooney Bravo

Default Douglas DC3

Default Cessna 208

Default Cessna 208 Amphibian

Default Piper Cub

Default Lockheed Vega

Default Learjet 45

Default Boeing 777

Default Boeing 747

Default Boeing 737-400

FSX:

Default Cessna 172

Default Mooney Bravo

Default King Air

Default Learjet 45

All paint kits linked from SimViation.com

Thanks Simi, that's a great help, finding these layered paint kits isn't always that easy :welcomeani:

not sure if these are layered....but even still, that's easily done in Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro, Paint.Net, GIMP etc. etc.

Does anyone have request for a paint kit? I'm sure they can be found and added here at a later date...maybe a sticky will be needed soon too.

You can also grab the textures from the default white livery and then export to editor.

Then put a new layer on top of the base layer - set the blend or something to 'multiply'. That way you can paint but it will also keep the details like rivets and panels.

Obviously this is last resort as it does not look all that sharp and sometimes looks a bit fugly.

Still the option is there :)

I tired to do a paint on the learjet which didn't go well. I was using gimp and it was saying that the .BMP files where of an unsupported copression :(. Hopefully I can find one compatible with gimp.

Use DXTBmp to open it and export to the editor

Ik. Ik. The learjet uses an incompatible .BMP file (the one on the topic). I've found a .dds Mooney bravo which I am yet to test on the computer

I prefer a quality paint kit that's has an image so you can do the fuseularge in once peace and copy sections from that to the correct files. I have found a page with links to a lot of paint kits but I don't know if they are compatible with the base game as most are add on aircraft. If there was a paint kit that includes the aircraft in it then great!

Another FSX request, please: I've never found a decent paint kit for the FSX default 747?

I've tried, but TBH the results aren't too great. :(

Cheers,

I've read somewhere that there are paint kits for the defuly aircraft in the SDK, which is on disk 1 of the deluxe edition. Idk if its there for steam edition which is the one I need

Hi Sam!

Thank you for that. The SDK (for FSX SP2 and Acceleration, in my case) does include:

  • Modeling SDK: A new file, Modeling File Formats, describing the .x and .xanim file format extensions used by Flight Simulator X. Also, sample diffuse, specular and bump texture files are provided for the Boeing 737 and 747, to help demonstrate the issues involved in repainting an aircraft.

There is a whole section on Texturing Aircraft Models, and although there's some good advice in there, much of it discusses techniques I have already used. However, I think my main problem is summarised in this sentence:

"The texture resolution for aircraft textures was left at 1024x1024 pixels for a standard texture for most aircraft."

<sigh>  Thanks, Micro$oft. That means that my attempts look pretty naff, TBH, when compared to the PMDG models, for instance. OK, I'm by no means a skilled repainter, but here's an example of what I mean:

Not good....

But you never know, someone somewhere might have had a go at improving things....     :)

Cheers,

I mainly want nice quality skins for prop aircraft while I rank up in fspassengers. Such as the Mooney bravo that I'm using currently. I also want a city wings paint for the Let 410 as that would be the next aircraft I pick. P.S. the post that made this topic active again was a necro post (responding to old threads) by me
