allardjd 1,853
How is it possible to get a "mottled" or "noisy" texture in Paint.Net? I see AC parts in texture files that, when examined closely are not monochromatic. They are a hodge-podge of various colored pixels, sometimes changing relative density across various portions of the part or panel. It creates a more interesting, complex and believable painted surface, but I don't know how to achieve it within the graphics editor. Is there an efficient way to achieve that effect without having to attempt it pixel by pixel? John
stu7708 244
Not sure about what functions are available in Paint.net, but in photoshop i'd try to make a custom paintbrush. It basically lets you paint a predefined pattern or shape with a paintbrush.. Kind of like the chessboard paint at 3:12 in cartoon.
allardjd 1,853
There doesn't seem to be any capability in Paint.Net for custom brushes aside from how large they are. I had some success with the mottled look by using the following... 1) Using the Lasso Select to grab and edit irregularly shaped areas instead of circles and rectangles 2) Some things on the Effects -> Blurs menu, both Unfocus and Surface Blur seem to go some way toward giving me the effect I'm looking for but it's kind of fiddly and easy to get wrong. Still looking for expert advice on this. I've seen editors with an Airbrush or Spray Can tool (MS Paint?) which might be just the ticket but P.N doesn't seem to have that. Still seeking enlightenment on this, experts. John
mutley 4,498
I am not sure exactly what you are after there John but I have just had a look at Paint.net and how about using the "Add noise" effect. An example. New image (Or add layer) Fill with say, grey. On the Menu bar go Effects > Noise > Add noise and play around with the sliders to see what you can get. If you put this onto a new layer you could use the layer blend option for more effects
allardjd 1,853
Santa brought Abacus' FS Repaint. I've only used it a little but it has some tricks that Paint.Net does not, most notably a two-color (right click to spray one, left click for the other) aerosol can tool, custom brushes and the ability to see results on a rotateable 3D airplane in real time. That latter feature by the way, is the cat's whiskers for figuring out what that little thingamabob tucked into a cranny of the texture file really is. Just fill it with a prominent color and check out the real-time aircraft image. Once you know what it is, hit the Undo button and proceed. FS Repaint handles DXT compression seamlessly, including settings for specifying the file type or just choosing to save it in whatever the original format was. It appears to be able to handle FSX as well as FS9, but I haven't kicked those tires yet. The boxed version came with a free Twotter for FS9 and for FSX. Not to sell Paint.Net short, it does some things that FS Repaint doesnt, including specifically blurs, noise, distortion kind of things, and of course is not specific to FS files, as FS Repaint is. I guess I'm going to use both interchangably, as I do with airport editors. I've found that both ADE9X and AFX have features that the other doesn't, so I routinely use both. mutley 4,498
Hi John, I had forgotten FS Repaint had an in-built editor, it reminds me of MS Paint. It is a great tool for seeing the fruits of your labour without having to fire up the sim and for identifying which tile you need to edit. Shall we be expecting a new Boxwings livery? Cheers
allardjd 1,853
Quote Shall we be expecting a new Boxwings livery? No, I'm quite pleased with the old one, however we may see some more AC bearing that livery. My original foray into repainting, which I've studiously avoided until recently, was simply to make some more variants of GA types for use as AI. I add AI traffic at one FS9 airport every day, populating the empty airfields as I find them. Having a GA type available in a dozen colors just adds to the believability. I'm finding repainting easier than I thought, at least at a basic level, so am branching out a little as time permits. John
