Not Chedburgh either i'm afraid...and it seems you're still in Yorkshire..... take a look at my previous clues, i'm not sure that Yorkshire is one of the "Home Counties".

correction - I do apologise, i made a mistake on my previous clue, I said that 101Sqn were based here in 1942, this is incorrect, they left in late 1941.... my bad!

I've included the corrected clue below:

[clue]

This airfield was opened in 1942 as a satellite to a nearby major RAF Bomber Command station that was, at the time, home to 13 OTU. Within a year of its opening, this airfield then came under the control of No. 9 Group Fighter Command.

:wow: simi for your last set of clues, which has helped me out alot. :thum:

So i am going for RAF Finmere which was the satellite airfield to nearby RAF Bicester. which flew Bristol Blenheims.

Mike, absolutely spot on!

Indeed it is RAF Finmere, now used as a Racing/Karting track, glider field and, as one of the clues alluded to, the site of one of the largest Sunday markets in all of the Home Counties (although, technically, Oxfordshire is now no longer a Home County)

Finmere Aerodrome also housed Rob Walker's Racing Stables, many a great racing driver of the late 60's and 70's learned their trade there.

So, mike, excellent joining of the dots there, although it's quite likely the 13 OTU clue gave it away....

Thanks simi you are right it was the 13 OTU clue that gave it to me. :wow:

As I will be away for the next few days from this Sat. to Mon. and no access to a computer here are two more clues to help you on your way. Good Luck.

Clue 2. A famous movie star worked here.

Clue 3. The Air Ministry did used this place for maintenance units till it close.

Hi Mike,

Didn't James Stewart serve at "Ol' Buck" Old Buckenham EGSV ?

:clapping:You have done it again Joe. You are right it is Old Buckenham Airfield. Well Done Matey.

It opened late 1943 as a USAAF Air Station no. 144 and James ( Jimmy) Stewart was group opps. officer in 1944.

The Air Ministry used it for maintenance units from May 1945 till it closed in June 1960.

B24 Liberators flew out of here as part of the eighth air force and the groups tail code was a " Circle-J "

It's over to you then.

OK, guys, i think i have it, but before i blurt it out, i'm going to string a few clues together and see if anyone else can get it - i've had my turn recently, so i figure it should go elsewhere....

the clues so far were:

  • [*:1uupnojv]Real World aerial photo of the location[*:1uupnojv]CLUE: no aircraft based here but it is used for helicopter pilot training[*:1uupnojv]Wrong Answers - RAF Hendon / RAF Shawbury, but these gave us our next clue[*:1uupnojv]CLUE: NOT an RAF base, but a 'senior' service. This, I would expect should point us towards the RNAS bases maybe.[*:1uupnojv]CLUE: "think Helicopter, West Country" - only 3 RNAS bases in the West Country that i know of....

So, stringing these together points us towards a Helicopter Training area, possibly RNAS, in the West Country, and there's only 3 that i know of...anyone care to check them out in FSX for a match?

no, ok, well let me tell you that it's NOT RNAS Culdrose, RNAS Yeovilton OR RNAS Portland...however, i do believe all the info you need WILL be on the Royal Navy website...and im sure our merry Mutley is having a field day with this one!
