A geologic fieldtrip

Recommended Posts

..to Mount St Helens, in a Mustang!

FX1268.jpg

On my way...

FX1274.jpg

so many volcanoes in the area, which one is this? Mt Adams I believe?

FX1283.jpg

Over Mt St Helens, notice how the crater is not round, but is missing part of the rim?

FX1289.jpg

Flying into the opening of the rim, where you can clearly see a new lava dome forming, complete with smoke...

FX1295.jpg

over the lava flows, the photoreal textures look great!

FX1297.jpg

Mt St Helens did not explode vertically, like most other volcanoes, but the summit slid downhill at the start of the eruption, leading to a sideways explosion, towards the north. That is why part of the rim is missing.

FX1304.jpg

Following the lahar (volcanic mud flow) away from the volcano. From here, you can clearly see the the destruction towards the north(left) is much greater than to the south, due to the sideways explosion...

Wonderful scenery, it looks great, even for a geologist like me...

That's a long lava trail, Jan - what's the scenery, BTW?

Cheers - Dai. :baton:

In the last shot, you see a lahar, which is a mud flow caused by a volcanic eruption. They can travel for miles and miles.....

The scenery is PNW or Pacific North West, from FTX/Orbx

Hi JanKees,

Great geology lesson and super shots.

I'm surprised our paths didn't cross as I am flying in that area at the moment for an upcoming review of PNW :baton:

Cheers
