Mr Mutley Extraordinaire!

Recommended Posts

Greetings Mut!

Can you do me a favour and tell me what your idle and load temps are for your 7900gtx?

I want to compare with my Thermalright temps.

If you are using the latest nVidia driver, it no longer displays GPU temp so you will need nTune 5.05, it replaces ‘coolbits’ for overclocking also.

If you're too busy, no probs! :mrhappy:

OK I downloaded the program.

I took a couple of screens as I don't really know what you are looking for

Idle

FSX running over water panning around the aircraft (Maule)

Cooler than Martyn's but he has a more powerful card in a laptop.

Thanks lads!

Don't think yours is applicable MartYn as it's in a lappy and it's not a 7900gtx.

Thanks for sharing though. :mrhappy:

So that’s 44 at idle and 47 load then Mut!

With the Thermalright and a slow quiet fan mines about 40 and 44 it is a hot day though.

The thermal compound wont have cured yet so it will be a bit higher than when it's settled down.

I did expect lower, but it is a puny fan and virtually noiseless.

It's so nice to not hear than bloody jet engine of a fan on the stock cooler.

I'll let you know how I get on when it's settled in a bit.

Thanks chaps. :mrhappy:

Glad we could help Martin, this seems to have cheered you up so it was worth it :mrhappy:

What is the ideal temperature? I have no gripes about my temperatures so I don't really worry about it.

I cannot hear my graphics card fan at all. The noisiest is the cpu fan I think, still it pays to be a bit "mut & jeff" like me, I often have the headphones onso don't notice it anyway.

Have a great weekend Mart.

Cheers

It's now totally silent with the Thermalright HR-03, unless you jam your ear right next to it. I fitted a slow spinning Nexus fan, not the most powerful but ultra quiet. It's quiet a relief I can tell you.

Temperatures are only slightly less than the stock cooler at the moment, which is why I was asking about your temps.

Not sure if you are overclocking at the moment, if not that would be interesting, I guess we could add about 3-4 degrees onto your temperatures to be the equivalent of my OC'd card.

That would bring yours to 48 and 51. With mine at 40 and 45, that would give me eight degrees less at idle and 6 degrees less under load. That would be about what I would expect from the Thermalright so I hope you aren’t overclocking at the moment

It's also worth remembering that the 7900gtx cooler is regarded as being quite efficient with it's big heat pipes compared to other cards, so that would explain the temperatures I'm seeing also.

The Thermalright HR-03 design was formulated before the 7900gtx was introduced so the heat output is greater than the cards the HR-03 was originally designed for, it still handles the heat output easily though (and silent) Thermalright have released a new version of the HR-03 for use with the red hot 8 series cards, it has two extra heat pipes.

Installation was a bit of a fiddle, with the instructions lacking a little, they didn't emphasis certain important bits of installation advice sufficiently.

The Instructions also failed to mention that two set of hands were essential. Luckily I had Katy available so I called on her for assistance. She's quite good at such things so great as an assistant.

Installation went like this: [Not as bad as it sounds]

Installed cooler only to realise that without an extra pair of hands the mounting plate has slipped slightly out of position, so cleaned off the thermal paste and yelled for Katy to come to my rescue. With me gripping the cooler tightly in place she installed the thumbscrews and tightened them.

Then a few seconds later, I looked at the cards base and realised a short circuit was a possibility as the mounting back plate was touching two chunks of solder. It was then I realised that the minor mention (illustration only) of the back plate, mounting pad had been omitted from the instructions at the vital section. Uttering a very naughty expletive at the top of my voice, I once again bellowed for my trusty assistants. :mrhappy: Katy came dawdling down the stairs [much to my dismay at a snails pace] and carefully removed the thumb screws and stuck the star shaped pad on the back for me. Didn't have to reapply paste this time. Screws went back down only for me to realise one of the rubber washer’s wasn’t on, so one screw off and then back on again. :poster_oops:

:mrhappy: As you've probably realised, by this time I was slightly irritated to say the least.

I would like to add that I wasn't actually in much of a cooler installing mood, after installing laminate floor and decorating Katy's room all week I was fed up with such things. :bored:

Anyway, now I've done it would be a breeze to do again, so if anyone is interested in installing this cooler and achieving very low temps and no noise then I can save you some hassle courtesy of my cock ups.

Was it worth it? Most certainly yes, still to test just how cool the set up is but the noise reduction is excellent. :eyebrow:

Hi Mart,

Mine is not OC'd you'll be pleased to know :mrhappy: I try to leave well alone, years of tinkering have taught me that.

I'm pleased all that hard work was worth it, can you hear a pin drop??

Just checked a bit more accurately, and after 10 minutes to warm up, I'm seeing 38 degrees at idle and the ambient is quite high today.

Minus the overclock, let's say two degrees to be on the conservative side [may be more] also minus the few degrees above the normal room temp, I make it about 35-36 degrees, so that’s 8-9 degrees less than your stock cooler Mut.

A couple of degrees less than the hyper fast, ear smashing, supersonic, mega speed, stock BFG cooler.

If I overclock I’ll probably apply Arctic Silver instead of the Thermalright paste and mount a higher cfm 120 fan instead of the 92 fan.

What is the ideal temperature?

There is no 'ideal' temp quoted for normal operation, it depends on many variables, the cooler fitted, the ambient temperature etc.

The only temperatures quoted by the manufacturers of CPU's and GPU's are the maximum recommended temperatures.

If we are going to compare temperatures then it should be in terms of degrees above ambient temperature, otherwise if you measure yours in the height of summer in Arizona and I measure mine in Alaska in the winter with my house heating not working shivering in a furry coat, then we won't be comparing like for like.

I don't really worry about it.

Nor I Mut!

But as I have just fitted an aftermarket cooler I want to make sure my fitting has been done properly, hence the query. As you know, my objective was to get rid of the crazy BFG cooler. :mrhappy:

I try to leave well alone, years of tinkering have taught me that.

Oh yes!!! I know what you mean Mut. Quite a few times I've tinkered and ended up with more expense and a sore throat from all the ranting and raving. :mrhappy:

You have to be prepared before you tinker and know exactly what your doing, read the instructions ten times and take your time.

As they say in woodwork, measure twice and cut once. My version of that is measure twenty times and cut once.

It's an urge though you see... like the mountain climbers that see an unclimbed mountain and have a desperate urge to conquer it. :-)
