Spitfire Mk 1 FW8 was the sole Spitfire delivered to the French Air Force before the war and was tested at Orleans Bricy between 1939 and 1940. It was seized by the germans when they reached Orleans in june 1940, but by then it was already badly damaged.

Spitfire Mk IIa P7849 QV-J, which was flown by Flt Lt Walter Lawson of 19 Squadron, based in Fowlmere in june 1941. He used this aircraft to shoot down two Me109's. The aircraft was later converted to a Mk.V and flew with the USAAF. Flt Lt Lawson disappeared during a mission to Rotterdam in August 1942
