allardjd 1,853
Fact or fable: hunt is on for buried Spitfires http://www.theaustralian.com.au/business/aviation/fact-or-fable-hunt-is-on-for-buried-spitfires/story-e6frg95x-1225995654752 Wouln't that be a hoot? The stories are all over the map regarding condition, type and quantity but it appears many people believe there's something to it. At least it's much easier than melting them out of the Greenland ice cap. John
hurricanemk1c 195
I'm afraid to say this might be false - just like the TSR-2 production jigs being stored, not scrapped, in a Welsh deep mine, then sealed Would be nice to see it was true though!
mutley 4,498
I think it may be a concoction of half-truths and romantic licence! But I do admit if it was true...wow
allardjd 1,853
Burma signs deal to dig up buried World War II planes http://www.foxnews.c...test=latestnews I thought there was another thread on this too, but can't find it. They now say up to 60 AC, with excavation to begin by the end of October. John
hurricanemk1c 195
There was rumour that the amount of Spitifres being airworthy might decrease the price of them - not too sure this will happen though. Hopefully some will be displayed 'as is', with a restored Spittie along side, with the whole story behind the packing and discovery etc.
allardjd 1,853
I've got Faireys at the bottom of my garden . . . But do you have fibre optic probe photos of the crates they're in? I was a little skeptical at first but this is beginning to ring true to me. We should know soon. John
britfrog 180
there is also a rumour that many spits were buried at an airfield north of swindon which is still MOD land so no-one can go looking for them however this was the base that they were released/sold to the public after the war so there may be some truth in it, time will tell
britfrog 180
just came across this further snippet of news http://www.flyingmag.com/news/start-digging-spitfires-cleared-excavation
allardjd 1,853
That article is a bit more accurate than some I've read. Several have said the AC were buried in August 1945 "...to keep them out of the hands of the enemy...", which was not an issue at that point in the war. This article also correctly cites that the Mark XIVs have R-R Griffons, not Merlins. John
allardjd 1,853
Hunt for WWII Spitfires in Burma called off... http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/asia/burmamyanmar/9874667/Hunt-for-WWII-Spitfires-in-Burma-called-off.html Too bad... brett 2,316
"he told them they were digging in the wrong spot. They just wouldn't listen." The head honcho here has a pretty good job getting paid to guess.
allardjd 1,853
If the sponsor's money dries up, the game is over, whether the airplanes are there or not. It's an expensive game and someone has to pay the coolies and cover the equipment rental, the diesel fuel, hotels, transport, food, travel, etc. Whatever technical resources are needed, i.e leased instruments, hired experts, etc, just runs up the bill further. There is a teaser in the Telegraph article that suggests an Israeli team is standing by and trying to get permission to take over the hunt. John
