Soaranden 84
I've released the freeware Kandahar Airfield (kandahar_ver_1.zip). It is available for download at FlightSim.com. As a surprise, I've also released a new freeware version of Bagram AFB (bagram_ver_3.zip) that is based on satellite imagery. Since Kandahar is by far the more extensive and detailed airport, I'll show mostly images of Kandahar here, and I'll add a comment to each image. The last two images, however, will show Bagram. Dan Welcome to Kandahar. This is Kandahar's main gate and the road leading to the airfield. This screenshot shows most of the airfield near sunset. This screenshot is taken from the southwest end of the flight line near sunset. A portion of Quebec Ramp can be seen in the foreground at the bottom of the screenshot. The runway approach lighting is based upon information obtained from the Afghanistan Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation. A portion of the airfield after sunrise. Kandahar is very long with flight lines extending beyond the ends of the runway. This screenshot, taken after daybreak, shows nearly all of Kandahar. Out-of-frame on the left is Quebec Ramp. Out-of-frame on the right is the gate to the base. A C-130 is touching down on Rwy 5 at dawn. At the opposite end is Rwy 23. Some of the detailed infrastructure is visible here, and the forklift has been given some cargo. This is behind the flight line at the northeast corner of the airfield, and it shows a portion of the perimeter road. As is the case at the real-life Kandahar, it is possible to drive around the entire airfield using this road. Here the bed of a pickup truck is holding some cargo. Here a custom-modeled door has been created with custom day and night textures and added to a building. The building, itself, is a custom building that uses generic textures for the walls and roof. Phone call at sunrise. Aftermath of an IED on a road near the airfield. An observation tower with men and provisions. Juliet Ramp during an extremely rare downpour. One of the two lighted helipads at Kandahar--this one part of Stallion Ramp--during a cloudburst. Bell 212s on Stallion Ramp on a better day. A C-130J-30 and a C-130 on Whiskey Ramp. Background shows (in order from front to rear) Victor Ramp, Uniform Ramp, and Tango Ramp. A busy morning for helicopters departing from three of Kandahar's 79 helipads. Helipad 36--part of Mike Ramp--is the other lighted helipad at Kandahar. Rwy 23 at dawn. Predator UAV hangars. A Predator on Taxiway F. The fuel truck for the Predators is located inside a hangar. Another view from a hangar. This is a slingload flight at Bagram AFB. Slingload flights have been included with both the Kandahar and the Bagram airport releases. This is Bagram's Medevac Ramp at sunset.
