Hi Guys,

After being impressed over the last few months by the quality of the reviews on Mutley's I just signed up today, so this is my first post.

I've just upgraded to Windows 7 64 bit and so am having to reinstall FSX (and all those add-ons!). At the moment I have (or had!) the FSGenesis mesh installed and although it is far, far better than the default mesh it is not without it's inaccuracies (e.g. massive levees on some rivers (try flying the length of the Nile) or sunken/raised lakes.

Before reinstalling everything I wondered if any of you had experience of other mesh such as Global X 2010 and whether any of the alternatives were any better.

Thanks in advance.

Steve

Hi Steve

First of all :icon_welcomeani: to the forum, it's great to have you on board. Post moved!

I have to admit not to having a global mesh for FSX although I did for FS9, there are so many higher resolution meshes with the smaller areas I have not had a chance to try Global X or Genesis but I am sure one of our members will have.

Cheers

Joe

I got FS Global 2010 about a year ago and it looks great to me.

The only problem with a global mesh is that it can wreck havoc with other add-ons with local meshes. For some reason FSX seems to disregard the priority of the scenery layer when it comes to meshes, and just picks the one with best resolution. Some time this means that things end up looking very strange.

Thanks for that stu7708.

I've also noticed that it can mess with some of the FSX missions. The mission to rescue climbers in Alaska becomes extremely hard as the landing area becomes a slope of ice rather than a nice flat, horizontal landing zone. I had to make several attempts before I managed not to let the plane slide off down the mountain every time. Also there was a sea-plane mission that I couldn't even attempt as there was a vertical wall of water right outside the seaplane base.

Unintended consequences, eh?!

BTW do you find many artifacts in Global X 2010? Apart from those I mentioned in my original post I have also come across a spike in the Himalayas.

Another bumped post :wootmesalia:

What are the general feelings about Mesh in FSX. I'm using the Horizon Scenery and wondered if the default Mesh was good enough or is it worth looking at alternatives? Is FS Genesis any good or even worth it. The Mesh is not something I want to bother with if it isn't value for money or if it causes problems.

Any further thoughts?

I bought the one-year subscription to FS Genesis and am kind of miffed with him at the moment. He's released a whole new family of mesh that he's barred the subscribers from as part of their subscription. It's something to do with an agreement between him and the owners of the source data he uses for the new batch. He's come out with a "special price" so if you're a subscriber you can get what should have been free (pre-paid unlimited access, actually, which is what was promised) at a reduced price. Gee, thanks.

The quality is OK. The biggest issues I've seen in FS9 are airport plateaus, which are kind of unavoidable because of the airport "flatten" areas in FS. Those aren't the fault of the mesh-maker and there's little he can do about it. It's more a matter of FS airports not conforming to the real world and the FS scenery engine trying to meld the two.

Graeme,

Gen X comes with it's own 5m mesh for the UK volumes, you won't get better than that at the moment, this replaces the default FSX mesh which I think is somewhere around 76m (Standard SRTM resolution? Someone will correct me I sure).

Usually, when you buy a scenery package, Aerosoft Gibraltar X or Madeira X for example, it will come with its own higher mesh just to make things more pointy in that specific region.

Global meshes are ok FS Global 10 would be my choice albeit expensive but I wouldn't get enough use to warrant it, I am more than happy with the local meshes from my addons. If I had no other sceneries then probably would purchase it.

Clear as mud? <_<

Thanks Joe - clear enough to cross it off my list of things to worry about or purchase so job done.

Cheers :good:
