A West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service spokesman was unable to say if anyone had been injured or killed in the incident.

A Sussex Police spokesman said: "There has been an aircraft crash that was taking part in the Royal Air Forces Association show.

"It has crashed into a field north of the airfield. At this stage I am unable to confirm if there was a fatality."

The show is organised by the Royal Air Forces Association.

Events planned for the first day included a included a Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, using a Lancaster Spitfire and Hurricane."

One can only hope nobody was hurt.

As for the pilot, I fear the worst Steve.

It was more than likely a spitfire, hurricane etc. The images on the news suggested a catastrophic impact.

Apparently the fire brigade were hampered by foot and mouth precautions, they had to sterilise their boots and equipment when arriving or leaving the scene.
