Twin Piper Cub PA-11?

Recommended Posts

J-3Z? Nice shots Joe - looks really odd!

Thanks Kieran

The manual gives this explanation

In 1952, Mr. Harold Wagner, of the Wagner Aircraft Co., at Troh's Skyport, Portland, Oregon, wanted to develop a simple aircraft that would give the performance of a twin-engined aircraft at low cost. Among his experiments was the Wagner Twin Cub, which effectively was two PA-11 Cub Special's joined together. The resulting aircraft was so unconventional that Mr. Wagner called it "The Thing". It flew well, However, for a couple of years, despite the unsynchronized engines and overlapping prop arcs, although wing loading allowed only one of the two fuselages to carry any people or payload. Not finding any commercial success, the aircraft was eventually reverted back to two separate Pa-11s.

That's pretty wild - never heard of that one. The only other cases I can think of where conventional AC were joined were the P-82 Twin Mustang and the Heinkel 111-Z were a bit more practical. There may be others, but those are the only two that come to mind.

EDIT: I'm guessing he went with the electric start option - hand propping that thing to get it started would be a scary thing.

Too right us health and safety folk would have a field day risk assessing that little activity :icon_yikes:

Not the nicest aircraft I've ever seen! Lovely scenery though, where are you flying?

I like the thought of a hand start, I hadn't thought of that! Of course they can't model that in FS (Yet?)

I had to show some nice scenery Sabre to take away from the ugliness of the aircraft!

The scenery is Earth Simulations Alderney.

Cheers

Joe

Actually, he'd only need a starter on one side. You could hand-prop the first engine with no complications, and then use the electric start for the second one.

Looks like a His n Hers aircraft to me. Take her flying but you don't have to sit with her.:001_th_smiles89:

I never said this though.

Wifey would cut my haggis' off.:icon_thumbup:

You can hand start Ants Tiger Moth! I was mucking about with it the other day and noticed that if you put your curser on the prop and pull down, it will fire up the engine :) I thought that was REALLY cool :icon_thumbup:

Also, agree that your scenery looks stunning :001_th_smiles89:

Somehow, seeing double without it being from the effects of alcohol, just doesn't have the same... appeal! :stars:
