Rudder Pedals need advice???

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys.

I have decided that I want to buy some rudder pedals and have seen these CH Products Pro Pedals do you think that they are good, or would I be better off getting something else?.

I don't really want to buy any of the plastic junky looking ones and am willing to spend a bit of money on pedals that will last for a good few years ;) .

CH Pro-Pedals ARE plastic, but aren't junky. I've had mine well over five years and they've never given me a moment of trouble. I think most of the other brands are probably OK too, however. This is probably one of those products where you can't make a bad choice.

I'm also looking for the pedals and it seems the CH Pro variant comes highly recommended. When it comes to Yokes does CH get the nod also? I've currently got the Saitek X52 Pro set up with stick and separate throttle and can't decide if I should make the jump over to a yoke.

I wondering what would be a good basic set up? CH Yoke, pedals and a throttle quadrant of some type? I'm primarily flying GA low and slow stuff although the Spitfire doesn't lend itself to a yoke :) Do people swap over between sticks yokes etc, I'm just trying to get a feel for a typical set-up though I think such a thing doesn't exist.

Sabre,

I have the CH Yoke (old style, not "Eclipse"), rudder pedals and their 6-lever quadrant. I can highly recommend all three. My only criticism is the three levers on the yoke are very small and toy-like, but are smooth and work well. Since getting the 6-lever quadrant I don't use those levers any more anyway.

CH makes a new style "Eclipse" yoke with "paddles" in the crooks of the yoke handles and some mode switches, etc, on the face. I don't recommend that, at least not if you plan to use the paddles as a substitute for a separate set of pedals. It's not a particularly good idea. The old style yoke is stll available.

Several friends have Saitek yokes and like them too. The Saitek yoke has a center detent that I find unrealistic, but the main shaft is metal instead of plastic as in the CH. Have had no durability problems with the plastic main shaft in the CH. One friend who had a Saitek had a problem with the LCD display in the center of the yoke. He called them and they were VERY familiar with the issue, so I suspect it's rampant, however they had him ship his yoke back and they took care of it and returned it quickly.

Friends also have the Saitek 3-lever throttle quadrants and they are very nice with a nice long throw.

Don't know anything about the Saitek pedals - have never seen a set in person.

I guess the bottom line is get those you like. I don't think either is a bad purchase.

Thank's for all the advice Guys.

Looks like the CH pedals will be the one's to go for, :thum: although now I have got the A2A accusim plane I am wondering if I should get Track-IR first, and then add the pedals at a later date! .

Oh difficult choice, but for me Track-IR would come before the pedals. The immersion and smoothness of movement Track-IR gives cannot be simulated by a hat switch in my opinion. Plus I think it helps you get the full benefit of the virtual cockpits that A2A produce.

The obvious answer is buy both - however if you do please give me a couple of days notice so I can make-up the spare room for you :yahoo:

Track-IR first and pedals a close second in my opinion.

There he goes again, "Getting me to buy stuff".

Agree with you about the Track IR coming first, and it's now at the top of my shopping list :secret: trying to fly and look around and zoom in the VC is not very clever with the hat switch.

Cheer's...Graham...

BTW: Better get that spare room ready! just in case ;)

Spending other people's money is dead easy, I'll have a look and see what else I can find

Well my CH Pro Pedals have arrived and I set them up late last night - well actually I plugged them in and windows said everything was fine. I haven't had much time to look into the set-up which seemed simple but I have a problem with the brakes. The brakes are on even when I don't touch the pedals. The brief look I had at the set-up didn't seem to mention any calibration.

Could well be just another schoolboy error on my part and as I said I haven't really had the chance to look into it properly but just wondered if anyone else had any initial problems of this nature?

Edit - seems I may need to install CH Control Manager which I didn't do. (Still don't recall being prompted to install it but I'll see what happens tonight)

Glad that you got your pedels already m8y, you lucky bugger :thum: .

So are you saying that the pedals are stuck in the "Brakes On" postion all the time???

Or do you mean that the flight loads and the plane has it's breaks on already? if yes to that last one, will the brakes release when you depress the pedals?.

BTW: It's nice to have a guy like you around to test these things out for me, before I buy :winka:

I've set-up the pedals as per instructions but at present (even after calibrating with CH Control Manager) the brakes remain partially on even when released. For example in the A2A Spitfire if I press the brakes and release they don't go to the same position ie fully off as they do when I pull the parking brake and release via cockpit controls. I'm confused now tbh, there are a few instances of this mentioned on different forums but atm I don't know how to fix it.

I've heard of this before and I think I remember who had the problem. Looking...

Thanks for looking John. I think I've solved it. In FSX the sensitivity setting for the CH Pedals Controller was down around 50% for the left and right brake, when I moved it to 100% the brakes fully applied and fully released. The pedals now seem to be working as they should.

Well done Sabre and John for finding a cure for the problem so soon

@ Sabre, how are you getting on with the pedels?, it's a big difference from the twist grip on your joystick I expect???

As suggested by many Mutley's members they basically improve the experience immensely. It's so much better than the twist on the stick. Obviously I've only had them a couple of days but having the pedals means I'm not trying to do three things on the stick when taxiing. Particularly the A2A Spitfire, I can now just hold the stick back to keep the very light tail on the ground and use the pedals for braking and rudder control. Highly recommended but still behind TrackIR if you have to choose.

I didn't have anything to do with it. Sabre worked it out on his own.

John

It's the thought that counts John and I appreciate the fact that you looked anyway so a big
