What a shame he aborted the missile.

Although I posted it, it was not my find unfortunately. It was posted to me on Facebook by a friend. But I bet the cops thought they had come across a real life bat car eh. They were lucky the pilot had his wits about him and overrode the computer systems. We would be reading a whole different story if not. Great story though.

Good video, Dai, which after much suspense and conjecture eventually reaches the right conclusion - it's not going to happen. I do believe the exchange of letters in Brian's account could have actually happened, but the one coming back from the military would have been written with tongue firmly in cheek. I've seen a simiar account set in the US Southwest - Arizona or California, and the aircraft was reported as an F-16 in that one. Like one with the naval vessel demanding that the lighthouse get out of its way, it's improbable to the point of impossibility.

Nobody flies around in domestic airspace with live weapons set for automatic relaease (and F-22s don't fly from aircraft carriers).

When a Radar Warning Receiver in a military AC detects a radar signal, it's compared to a database of known friendly and hostile systems, both air search and fire control types) and the type of potential threat is known almost immediately. If it's a known enemy system in an area where such a thing is plausible, then things begin to get considerably more interesting.

I'm sure they just used stock footage of anything that came easily to hand or "looked cool" to illustrate that kind of thing, without a second thought for accuracy or without even knowing any better. Any editor or producer who truly believes that military jets fly around in domestic airspace with live weapons set for automatic release is not the sharpest knife in the drawer.

Whoa, Brian - not intended to refer to you at all. I was talking about the editors and producers who put pieces like that together in the first place.

No disrespect meant toward you. I assume you posted it because it IS a funny story.

I missed it first time through, but the original piece erroneously refers to the Sidewinder as an air to ground missile. It's actually a short range IR air-air missile. Another inidcation that the editor has his head where the sun doesn't shine...

That reference is supposedly a quote from the alleged letter from the RAF Liason office. I'm guessing that the RAF knows the Sidewinder isn't air to ground and would not have ever said that. I suspect this whole thing was made up.

But, it has to be said, if ever an incident like that happened, the RAF response would probably be accurate!

...yup, i can vouch fo that - it's pretty much word-for-word what i'd say as a member of the RAF if i were the Wing Cdr replying to the email/letter from the police chief!...either that or "Thanks for the letter, i should have let him release the missile...now go away and arrest some REAL crooks!!"
