FSX instrument essentials

Recommended Posts

I have a reasonably basic set-up with FSX although I do utilise a couple of monitors. I also have Saitek X52 Pro stick for my Warbirds and a Saitek Yoke and throttle quadrant for other flying. I just wondered what additional equipment would be worth the investment for fsx. There isn't a hope of me ever developing a virtual cockpit so I can't get too carried away. Whilst listening to the podcast there was some debate about the Trim Wheel I also recall seeing somewhere on the forum a programmable switch panel for assigning various functions??

Anyway, any thoughts or realistic suggestions :)

If you don't have them, rudder pedals are #1. I'd recommend TrackIR 5 soon after that. All else ranks below those for me.

I do have the new Pro Flight trim wheel and like it very much but wouldn't rank it nearly as essential as the above items.

If you're thinking about a trim wheel, the Saitek Pro Flight Panel has a trim wheel along with a bunch of switches for the various lights, pitot heat, battery and avionics swtiches and ignition (off/left/right/start). You get a lot of useful stuff all in one package.

Beyond that, I really like the Saitek radio panel and auto pilot panel. Just my 2 cents.

Oops sorry John should have made that clear - I have both of those and would agree they are essential items.

Apologies for the lack of clarity.

I think it is good to take away as many functions away from the keyboard as possible.

I have a VRinsight switch panel and have all sorts of things assigned to it.

I must say I do like the look of the Saitek panels. Do they work with all aircraft I watched a review on YouTube that suggested they do not work with some payware products.

Mind given my impending hardware expenditure these may have to wait. Who knows my lottery numbers may come up at the weekend :whis:

Wow James

That's one very, very nice setup you have there - very jealous indeed. Looks like I need to seek further investment funds "The Wifey Bank"

What size monitors are they and how have you catered for all the usb devices?

I suppose I have the beginnings with the yoke, stick and pedals though I'd love to be able to have them both setup. :wacko2:

Richard, surely it's the/your multi panel (autopilot/flap/ autothrottle) which has the trim wheel - at least mine does! The switch panel with lights, avionics etc has gear switch and lights - at least mine does!

^_^:) Mike - got both and the radio panel

You are correct. Was writing this from work and I guess I got my wires crossed. :wacko2:

Thanks for straightening that out! :thum:

"Quote" What size monitors are they and how have you catered for all the usb devices?

24" LG monitors using eyefinity with a couple of USB Hubs to connect everything, The keyboard is a Logitech dinovoEdge (esier to use in the upright position). I made an extension to the Throttle clamp to place the x52 stick at a more comfortable position..

Greame have reposted the image via P/bucket..

Thanks James

I've ordered the Saitek Pro Flight Switch Panel as a start to the development. I think the Multi Panel will be next although I may go for a second throttle quadrant :)

Graeme, don#t forget with the USB stuff you'll need (a) GOOD powered usb hub(s). Them Saitek eat up the power and there's hubs and hubs. Not all the front and back usbs on the mobo are adequatelt powered either. Nothing worsed than the autopilot freezing on you and then you have to hand fly your cargomaster 400 nm and land it 'cus you forgot how to use the VC one. and that multipanel bu**ered, ther goes your trim wheel and flaps as well. I know you can save the flight and reboot, but thats half an hour a time . .

I have one powered hub - can't say it's a good one though - I think I got it from Maplins - I'll check it when I get in.

Any suggestiosn on hubs - I may as well get prepared :D :D

Birdman is right about the powered hubs. If you just plug the Saitek into a non-powered hub, they sometimes stop responding. Powered hubs take care of that issue.
