petermcleland 48
While you can see these pictures in full daylight, they look much better if you at least pull the curtains...They look even better in a darkened room. Airborne out of King Salmon and... ...bound for Kodiak. The VOR at Kodiak is selected but no signal yet. There is cloud but I intend to stay below it by weaving to avoid terrain. Here is the map with the aircraft at top left and the destination on the right edge. The weather is overcast... ...but with a reasonable base. Those "V"s ahead look like a good path to follow. Well I weaved through there with ease and now up ahead there is a big volcano that I think I will leave to my left... ...yes, that looks a reasonable path. I'm just passing the volcano and can see a promissing saddle, slightly right. As I approach that saddle the VOR ident came up and it is showing the radial to it, is 092 degrees and I've dialed that into the OBS. Nearing the saddle and still climbing. Just as I'm going through, the VOR signal drops out again, but at least it gave me the track to keep in mind. I think I can see a path ahead that is leading to the sea. The sea and land beyond are now in sight. And even more distinct now. On the sea passage there is a gibbous Moon with wisps of cloud passing over it. If you look at the GPS map you will see those two headlands ahead, that I need to pass before turning left into that sea channel. The VOR signal is coming in again now and I have the ILS for runway 25 selected on standby. Rounding the second headland now and in the left turn. There is that Moon again, lighting the aircraft as I fly through the channel. It also lights the water beautifully. The VOR is showing a "TO" course of 102 degrees and on the map you can see that the channel forks ahead and I'll take the right fork as that will point us towards Kodiak. A ribbon of moonlight. Easing the altitude up now to cross that high ground ahead. Coming over the top and with habitation visible ahead. Well I have just established on the ILS now but I see there is a crosswind from the right and we also have a bit of a downwind component. Bathed in moonlight as I near... ...touchdown at Kodiak. Taxying in hardly needs that landing light! I'll park here till tomorrow. Just enough Moon to cast a shadow! Thanks for looking
