Intel Performance Tuning Plan

Recommended Posts

For those of you with a K series CPU, that have always been tempted to overclock but scared to death that you might inadvertently damage your CPU, thus rendering the warranty void...

Intel now provide the Performance Tuning Plan. For a mere £20 Intel will cover you for damage caused by overclocking. With this reasonably priced plan, you're free to push your CPU beyond Intel's max settings, safe in the knowledge that if the worst happens you will be sent a new CPU.

It's great that Intel have decided to do this. I'm sure that many that were nervous about overclocking will now give it a bash.

I have this plan for my i7 3700K. Why not, for a mere £20.

I'm very impressed that Intel are doing this to be honest.

Eliminates a lot of the stress associated with overclocking.

Modern motherboards are built fo overclocking of course, so it's unlikely you will danger your board. However, given Intel's stupid decision to use garbage thermal paste under the Ivybridge heat spreader, and the alacrity with which the CPU temp rises above 1.350 volts, the CPU may still be vulnerable, despite the built in thermal protection. The protection plan is therefore good news.

A word of warning though when overclocking Ivybridge... Avoid IBT, OCCT, Prime 95 etc. None of them are validated for Ivybridge and can overstress the CPU. Asus recommends AIDA 64 and Cinebench.
