QM's contribution is CYAY in St. Anthony, Newfoundland. It's got a 4,000 foot runway, a small ramp, some buildings and a mess of approaches, with a pair of navaids to help you in. Next up is 3C1, in Elkhart, IN, with a pair of crossing runways, one a very modest 2243' X 40' paved one and the other longer and wider, but grass. There are no approaches, but there are nearby navaids. Though it's Canadian, QM didn't do CYPP, Parent, in Quebec. It happened to fall out of one of my normal lists so I'm the culprit on this one. It has a single 3,000' X 75' gravel strip, but is at least lighted. There's an NDB nearby for your navigating pleasure. FSX shows a fuel pump and a small apron, but no buildings. The final one is ENAN, Andoya, near the city of Andenes, Norway. It came from the military airfields menu, so I assume it's a military field even though MS does not mention it as such. There's another clue to that, a DME on the field which usually means that there's a TACAN there in the real world. ENAN is on the tip of a small peninsula and I expect the scenery is spectacular though I didn't get a chance to go look. Runway 15 shows an ILS and has a locator beacon at the Middle Marker (an LMM), which is a bit unusual. They didn't have the option of having an outer marker or an associated LOM unless they were going to put it on a barge. Don't be fooled into thinking that approach to runway 15 is a full ILS, however - it's localizer only. The field has two paved runways, one over 8,000' long. That's an odd spelling of the city name but that's the way MS spells it in FSX, so that's what you get. This airfield has a really odd layout - it has two runways almost end to end. The ramp and terminal lie at the south end of the more southerly runway, which is closed, but the parallel taxiway is not. It does have ILSs to both ends of the northern runway and both LOMs and LMMs to both ends as well. I gave it two plates because of the small size of the main image and the fairly extensive network of taxiways, many of which are also marked as closed. 29G is a county municipal in Ravenna, Ohio. It has a single 3,500' runway and more ramps and taxiways than a field that size has any right to have. It's a relatively complex footprint, including one custom building. The update today is KMEI, Key, in Meridian, Mississippi, possibly the shortest airport name in FSX, or likely at least tied for it. This one is a pretty good sized two-runway airport with the long one 10,000' long. It too had one complex building and enough taxiways that two plates seemed like a good idea to get the labeling for them off the main image. allardjd 1,853
2/3/13 Airport Diagrams New: CJX Crooked Creek - Crooked Creek, Alaska - US - http://forum.mutleyshangar.com/index.php/files/file/1951-cjx/ CYHH Nemiscau - Nemiscau, Quebec - Canada - http://forum.mutleyshangar.com/index.php/files/file/1950-cyhh/ UG23 Gudauta - Gudauta, Georgia - http://forum.mutleyshangar.com/index.php/files/file/1952-ug23/ KBLV Scott AFB/Midamerica - Belleville, Illinois - US - http://forum.mutleyshangar.com/index.php/files/file/1953-kblv/ GGOV Osvaldo Vieira - Bissau, Guinea-Bissau - http://forum.mutleyshangar.com/index.php/files/file/1954-ggov/ Updated: None Current Airport Diagram Stats @ Mutley’s Hangar: Uploads 1,717; downloads 2,190; subscribers 13 Quickmarch and I have a pretty good assortment for you today. I did my usual three and he added two. His first one, CJX, Crooked Creek, in Alaska, is probably a mistake on my part. I provided him a list of Canadian airports to work from and I believe this one crept into the list because of the ICAO beginning with "C", but it really is in Alaska. It's a small, un-paved, single runway airport but has a ramp with a taxiway connecting it to the runway and has a single building and a fuel pump - that's quite enough to make our acceptance criteria for diagramming it. CYHH, also in Canada, is QM's second airport today. It's way over in Quebec, a long way from Alaska, but is much like Cripple Creek - one gravel runway with a small ramp separated by a taxiway at one end - no building but still has a fuel pump. It also has an NDB on the field, some published COM frequencies and a handful of published approaches too. UG23 is in Gudauta, Georgia - no, not THAT Georgia, the one in Europe. I had to consult the internet to figure out if this one should be Europe or Asia, and it seems I'm not the only one confused by that. You can find sources that have it either way. The preponderance is with Europe, however, so that's where I posted it. It's a single runway airport, oddly shaped. The runway is approaching 10,000' long but there's not too much there - a ramp and two buildings. No radio frequencies, no approaches, no nearby navaids. KBLV is by far the most interesting one in the batch today. It's Scott AFB in Belleville, Illinois, pretty much due west of O'Hare but almost to Rockford. It has two decent sized parallel runways, widely separated. One is about 10,000' and the other 8,000'. It has a number of custom buildings and lots of everything else - COM frequencies, ILSs (4) approaches, nearby navaids. This is a full-featured airpatch and is a two-plate diagram. KBLV came from the military airfields list. Last on the list, from the national capitals list, is GGOV, in Bissau, Guinea-Bissau. If you're not up on such things, that's in Africa - I checked to make sure. It's a lot like many third-world internationals serving capitals you may not have heard of before. There's a single long paved runway and a modest ramp, taxiway system and a few buildings. It has a few navaids and one ILS which is, surprisingly enough, a Cat. III. My thanks to Quickmarch for all his help on these. He's doing well. Having decided to do a few Australian airports he bit off YBMC today, with the unlikely name of Maroochydore. More to the point it has a large, custom terminal building and this was his first experience with bringing one of them into a diagram. For those of you who may not have been following my prior notes closely, those do not come in "automatically" with the airport image. Instead they must be captured separately from a top-down screenshot in FSX and the building footprint extracted from that image, imported, and then sized, located and oriented correctly in the airport diagram. I'd say he did well. This is the 100th airport in the Australia/Oceania section of the collection. SBMZ is Porto De Moz (airport and city), in Brazil. It consists of a single paved strip about 4,300' long with a MS fuel pump. There is an NDB within a mile but that aside, no other navigational luxuries. It has no lights, no COM frequencies, no published approaches and not even a building to grace the place. Tradewind is not the kind of airport name I'd associate with Amarillo, Texas, but there you have it. this appears to be a fairly decent airport, with a pair of crossing runways, paved, the longer just under a statute mile long. It's non-towered, but is lighted and has a good system of ramps and taxiways and about a dozen buildings. There are three approaches (but no ILS) and good navaids nearby. The updated airport today is EGVO, Odiham Air Base in the UK. It has a pair of paved runways, but the shorter is closed. The long one is about 6,000 and has an ILS for one end. The field has two grass ramps shown, each lying parallel but about a runway width from the paved runways. They look for all the world like grass runways but are not designated as such. This field is towered and has a good system of taxiways. Two of the buildings are custom, and though you have to look carefully to see it, are parallelogram shaped, nearly rectangular, but skewed just a bit off square. There are no published approaches, but good navaids nearby, including a DME (actually a TACAN, I'm sure) on the field. Aside from an earthquake in the Solomon Islands, we don't seem to have upset the Earth's axis too much. His was YBRK, Rockhampton, in far off Queensland, Australia. I see a yellow rectangle in ADE when I look at it so he had a custom building to deal with. He never had any questions, so I can only assume he took it in stride. I can see it on the diagram and it looks good. This is a pretty good sized two-runway towered airport with a lot of the things that makes an airport interesting. My first one is LJLJ, Ljubljana, Slovenia. Yes, Elizabeth, there is a Slovenia, though I think that Slobbovia is a figment of someone's imagination. It's easy to confuse the two, however. The national capitals list coughed up this particular hairball today. OK, OK, it's not all that bad as airports go but it's just hard to not have a little fun over the name. It doesn't even have the distinction of being a "stan". LJLJ (didn't we have a President with those initials, or am I thinking of LJBJ?) has the obligatory very long single runway that is de rigueur for airports serving the capitals of impoverished countries no one has ever heard of - it even has an ILS for one end of it - a Cat III, no less. There are good navaids and it's even lighted. There are good ramps and a decent taxiway system that some one even took the time to label. My Canadian effort is CPR2, in Embrun, Ontario. It's a small place. The airport is non-towered and the single strip is grass, with no fuel pump, but there is a fence with two buildings on the runway side of it, so it qualifies. The runway is small, about 2,250' X 50' but there is an NDB in the neighborhood, so it shouldn't be hard to find. When I found the ICAO code FA54 staring at me from one of my lists today my first thought was, "Where the heck is that?". I contained my curiosity until I got far enough along with the diagram to pull it up in FSX to get the text data from the map screen. What a dummy - it's in Florida, about 150 miles from me, south from Tampa a ways. There's not much to FA54. It's called Coral Creek. It has a single paved runway and some navaids in the nearby neighborhood. It's non-towered and has no published radio frequencies or approaches, but it is lighted. I expected it to be one of those exclusive housing developments with a runway in the middle of it but looking in Google Earth, that's not the case. There does seem to be a VERY upscale golf club nearby and this airport may exist to serve that. It's referenced in the Country Club's website. I note some subtle differences between that version and this one, most notably the location of the MS fuel pump. Not that that makes much difference to anyone. Having been done on that date the older one is almost certainly from FS9 but for most airports there wasn't much change between FS9 and FSX. The updates are more to incorporate improvements in my methods that to pick up differences, but inevitably there are some changes in some of the airports. Pensacola is a big, complex airport, rivaling some of the smaller internationals. It has three runways, two of which are parallel. All are 200' wide and the two longer ones are 8,000 feet. There is only one ILS runway but there are ten published approaches. I used a second page to label the taxiways so it's a two-plater. KNPA is an interesting place to visit, particularly if your add-on traffic program happens to realistically put the Blue Angels there. KBAB, Beale AFB is in central California, not far from Sacramento and has some personal connections for me, once removed. My son-in-law was assigned there for some time, teaching survival and life support things to the pilots in the U2 community. At the end of his assignment he got a 2-1/2 hour ride to "...at least 70,000'..." in the back seat of the only two-seater, their training aircraft. He had laboriously worked his way through the quals he needed to do that and was lucky enough that the empty seat was available one day. Truly the ride of a lifetime. There are probably only a few thousand people in the world who have ever been to that height. When my daughter visited there, she got an almost-as-good 100 + mph ride down the runway in one of Beale's Mustang convertibles closely trailing a landing U2, while the pilot who was riding in the front passenger seat talked the landing pilot down to the runway. That's how it's done with the U2 at Beale. Beale has one big 12,000 X 300' runway. At first glance the ramp doesn't look like much until you eyeball it against the runway and conclude that it's about a mile long. They have an ILS for both ends of the runway and the one from the NW is a Cat III, not often seen at military bases. I suspect there's a reason but don't know what it is. NSFA Faleolo Intl is in Apia, Samoa and came from the national capitals list today. It has a single long runway, almost 10,000 feet, with a part-length parallel taxiway connecting two smallish ramps. It's towered and lighted and has an ILS to one end, as well as a couple of other published approaches. There are both NDB and VOR/DME on the field. By way of excuse, tonight was our monthly flight sim club meeting and I was on the hook for a presentation, which needed some study and practice. I spent a good part of the day boning up on that, so only had limited time for airport diagrams. Today's airport is in France, the first of a new request list. I'll be following up with more in the next several days, all of them in France, though maybe not tomorrow, which is shaping up to be another busy one. We'll see. I'm also expecting another request list soon, but haven't a clue yet as to the geographical area of that one. Our one and only airport diagram today is LFMF, an odd little airfield in Fayence, France. It has three grass runways, all under 3,000' long (one under 2,000'). They are of varying widths ranging from 164' to a whopping 525' wide. Just the thing for formation take-offs, I suppose. It has neither control tower or lights, nor for that matter, buildings. It does sport the ubiquitous MS fuel pump, however, and a pretty good assortment of nearby navaids, even though there are no published approaches available. It's quite a handful in FSX and is, at this writing, still a work in progress. Lot's of custom buildings and a bunch of taxiways to be displayed and labeled legibly. allardjd 1,853
2/20/13 Airport Diagrams New: CYDN Barker - Dauphin, Manitoba - Canada - http://forum.mutleyshangar.com/index.php/files/file/1976-cydn/ Updated: None (1 pending) Current Airport Diagram Stats @ Mutley’s Hangar: Uploads 1,737; downloads 2,198; subscribers 13 Here's a Canadian field from Quickmarch, CYDN. These are March's comments about it... "Here's CYDN. Obviously one of Canada's expanded second world war airports from deep in darkest Manitoba (somewhere north of Nowhere). I think they built these airfields because there was less for the recruits to run into. I'll bet the weather kept them focused. Anyway, this is one strange airport. Runways 08/26 and 02/20 are completely divorced from the main runway 14/32. No taxiway connections, I checked in FSX. However, I also checked in the RW and, sure enough the orphans connect to the main runway. The vestigial stubs of long-gone taxiways, I left in the drawing because they do exist in FSX." In my case I've been working pretty hard at devising an entire new technique for documenting taxiways at very large airports. I'm still hung up on LFPG, Charles de Gaulle, in Paris, but it's coming along. I've been dissatisfied with the clarity and legibility of those for some time and this one has forced me to act. It's an update, but the original was the FS9 version and wasn't quite so dense. I'm hopeful that this new, very laborious method will not be needed for very many airports. I'm also confident that once LFPG is done and posted I'll be back to my normal production rate. I also have the list of airports for the MEBAR (Mutley's Easter Bunny Air Rally) and have one new one to do for that group. There are others that need to be looked at to see if they need an update, but there's only one that needs a new diagram created from scratch. allardjd 1,853
2/22/13 Airport Diagrams New: None Updated: LFPG Charles-de-Gaulle - Paris, France (updated) - http://forum.mutleyshangar.com/index.php/files/file/617-lfpg/ Current Airport Diagram Stats @ Mutley’s Hangar: Uploads 1,737; downloads 2,206; subscribers 13 At last, LFPG, Charles de Gaulle in Paris is updated. What a job that was. To add insult to injury it didn't even increment the upload count because it was an update. In the course of doing it I have developed an entirely new way to document the taxiway networks for very large, very dense airports. The new method yields a product that's long on effort and likely somewhat short on usability, but it's legible and accurate with respect to what's in FSX. I don't expect to have to apply it to many airports, but have documented the details of the new method, which will probably need to be refined a little for the future. It's 14 plates and the zip is over 3.5 MB. There's a new feature in ADE that lets the user specify the grid size, so I took advantage of that to set 2,500' grid squares for the airport. It has a very large footprint, with an 11 X 6 grid network bounding it (41 of which contain airport features) - that's about 22,750' X 15,000', which is getting close to 4.5 X 3 statute miles. That is a big airport in anyone's book. If you can work up the interest, have a look at LFPG and consider letting me know, honestly, what you think. I don't like it much from the perspective of actually being able to use it for FS, but would welcome other's thoughts and impressions, particularly if anyone can suggest ways the method could be improved for other large airports as they come up. I'm not planning to do this one over again anytime soon, however and would only apply the new methodology to a very few very large and complex airports. Quickmarch 488
Yikes! What a nightmare! Looks like a bowl of spaghetti. I'm real happy that was done by you, John. Might have taken me a month. Cheers, March Back to the backwoods of Northern Manitoba where they don't even bother connecting the runways with taxiways (CYDN)
allardjd 1,853
2/23/13 Airport Diagrams New: EGXH Honington - Honington, UK - http://forum.mutleyshangar.com/index.php/files/file/1977-egxh/ KCCY Charles City Mun - Charles City, Iowa - US - http://forum.mutleyshangar.com/index.php/files/file/1978-kccy/ OKBK Kuwait Intl - Kuwait, Kuwait - http://forum.mutleyshangar.com/index.php/files/file/1979-okbk/ Updated: None Current Airport Diagram Stats @ Mutley’s Hangar: Uploads 1,740; downloads 2,208; subscribers 13 I am SO happy to have LFPLG out of my hair... I really relished working on some normal airports today. I managed the usual three, all new ones, but will do an update tomorrow. The airports today include EGXH, Honington, which is the sole MEBAR 2013 airport that needed to be done from scratch. Tomorrow I'll be checking the rest of the MEBAR route to see if any of them need to be updated outside their normal turn. They will get head of the line privileges if they do need to be polished up in time for the event. KCCY is Charles City in Iowa - I can honestly say I've never heard of either the city or the airport but it popped up as a request. OKBK, in Kuwait City came from the national capitals list, of course, one of the more civilized places I've seen from that list in a while. Of the three today, OKBK was the only one that required a second plate. Most of the more populous and prosperous country capitals on that list have been done already and what remains are mainly the dregs - third world nations, island nations, very small nations, nations you didn't know were nations and that sort of thing. allardjd 1,853
2/24/13 Airport Diagrams New: KEVU Northwest Missouri Regl - Maryville, Missouri - US - http://forum.mutleyshangar.com/index.php/files/file/1981-kevu/ Updated: EGFH Swansea - Swansea, UK (updated) - http://forum.mutleyshangar.com/index.php/files/file/166-egfh/ EGCB Barton - Manchester, UK (updated) - http://forum.mutleyshangar.com/index.php/files/file/116-egcb/ Current Airport Diagram Stats @ Mutley’s Hangar: Uploads 1,742; downloads 2,209; subscribers 13 This is an unusual mix, consisting of two updates and one new airport. All came from request lists, which is what drove the priority that selected a pair of updates. Those two were on a request list for the upcoming Mutley's Hangar MEBAR event and did need to be polished up a little. All the airports for that event are now done and I've created a zipped "bundle" of them in the MH File Library for those who are going to participate in the event so they don't have to bother downloading them individually. KEVU is from another request list - unrelated to the MEBAR event. One of the updates, EGCB, Barton, in Manchester, UK, has an interesting anomaly. The airport is a hodge-podge of five grass runways, three of which are parallel and share the 09/27 designation. Though three parallel runways is not an unheard of configuration, the most southerly one is designated 09/27. The other two are, predictably, 09R/27L and 09L/27R, but their designations are reversed in that the middle one is 09L/27R - logic would dictate it should be 09R/27L. I labeled the diagram as the airport is in FSX, but it's wrong. allardjd 1,853
2/25/13 Airport Diagrams New: KSUX Sioux Gateway/Col. Bud Day Fie - Sioux City, Iowa - US - http://forum.mutleyshangar.com/index.php/files/file/1982-ksux/ KFSD Foss - Sioux Falls, South Dakota - US - http://forum.mutleyshangar.com/index.php/files/file/1983-kfsd/ KATY Watertown Mun - Watertown, South Dakota - US - http://forum.mutleyshangar.com/index.php/files/file/1984-katy/ Updated: KEVU Northwest Missouri Regl - Maryville, Missouri - US (updated) - http://forum.mutleyshangar.com/index.php/files/file/1981-kevu/ Current Airport Diagram Stats @ Mutley’s Hangar: Uploads 1,745; downloads 2,210; subscribers 13 If KEVU, the update today, seems a little familiar to you, it's because I only created it yesterday. I realized late last night that I had failed to include a custom building footprint in the image. It was a quick fix and I didn't want to let it lay, so the update today takes care of it. The other three are from the same request list that produced KEVU yesterday and all are in the same part of the US. KSUX, Sioux City Gateway airport is, of course, the site of the miraculous/horrific arrival/crash of the United DC-10, Flight 232 on July 19, 1989 after a fan disk failure destroyed the flight control systems. I realize the airport name is truncated in KSUX, but so is it in FSX, so that's what you get. All three of the new airports today are of a similar size and layout, the first two requiring two plates to capture all the taxiway labeling legibly. Not only is this a bumper crop day for airport diagrams with six new and an update - over twice the normal number - they are the only ones who have access to them. A recent maintenance update to the forum software (by the distributor, not by Mutley) has broken several pieces of the MH forum, including the File Library and the Blogs section. I can't post the new and updated diagrams and forum users can't download any of them, new or old. Subscribers, however, still get the new diagrams e-mailed to them and many have a full set. I trust that the MH File Library will be fixed relatively soon, but if anyone who is not currently a subscriber is looking for a reason to get on the list, here it is. The two Canadian fields, CYCN and CYZR are from Quickmarch, who has recently taken on some that are a little more complex than the ones he first cut his teeth on. I almost literally cannot tell his from mine. One noteworthy airport included today currently goes by the name Honiara Intl (AGGH), but was at one time called Henderson Field, and before that was Lunga Point. It was taken from the Japanese just as it was completed, by the US Marines who went ashore at Guadalcanal on August 7, 1942, only eight months after Pearl Harbor. Subsequently expanded and improved by the US Navy Seabees it became an invaluable Allied asset throughout the Solomons Campaign. allardjd 1,853
2/27/13 Airport Diagrams New: DAAG Houari Boumediene - Algiers, Algeria 7TE6 Stovall Ranch Nr 1 - El Campo, Texas - US 09R Tyler Co - Woodville, Texas - US Updated: None Broken -> Current Airport Diagram Stats @ Mutley’s Hangar: Uploads 1,745; downloads 2,210; <- Broken subscribers 13 The MH File Library continues to be inaccessible to mere mortals. The word from Mutley is that a bug report has been submitted and accepted by the forum software makers and that they will fix it by and by. The problem resulted from a recent software upgrade - nothing gets fixed without something else getting broken in the process. Today's airports - only three - are from the hot places, Algeria and Texas. Since I've worked my way through all of the request lists I had on my plate I'm back to using my normal lists, which are from a variety of sources and each list is randomized. The two Texas airports today - both pretty small - came from separate lists, so just coincidence really. I was able to bang out both of them in less than 30 minutes total - they should all be so easy. DAAG, in Algiers, is a big two-runway international that, at first glance, made me think of the recently diagrammed Pyongyang airport in North Korea. Both consist of two large runways laid more or less end to end. There are significant differences in detail between the two airports, but both take up a big chunk of real estate due to their linear layout. DAAG came from the national capitals list.
