mutley 4,498
Has anyone tried this yet? This program uses a webcam to track your face an use use its position to move around the screen without expensive bespoke hardware.. read on "For quite some time now, commercial as well as non-commercial face-tracking programs are available, that make gaming and 'simming' fun: by just moving your head, you can look around in the game you play! The existing programs have proven their power and are used by many people around the world. These programs have also got a few shortcomings: they may cost you quite a bit and they require the users to wear some clip, hat or other device with LED's to make it work... To make face-tracking available to everyone and eliminate the need for anything but your computer and a (simple) webcam, we started making FaceTrackNoIR in May 2010 and by now, over 100 games/sims can be played with it. FaceTrackNoIR supports the Free-track-protocol, TrackIR enhanced games and can be used with PPJoy and VJoy, for games that are not supported elsewhere. Especially for FlightGear we incorporated an UDP-protocol. Since version 1.4 support is available for MS Flight Simulator 2002, 2004 and FSX, as well as some older games like CFS3. Version 1.7 will contain some big changes: FaceTrackNoIR will be more modular, so new headtrackers, filters and game-protocols can be added easily." allardjd 1,853
If it works, sell all your TrackIR stock as quickly as possible. John
britfrog 180
have known about them for some time however being a thicko, i read the manual and glaze over. When somebody intelligent can write a manual that makes sense to the average moron like me then i will give it a try until then it seems a bit like snake oil,-- a bit too good to be true
stu7708 244
Tried it but couldn't get it to work in FSX. And then I messed up some setting so now the software won't pick up any movement.
M31 0
I reckon its best to just buy a Track IR device and be done with to be honest, I put off buying one for a long time mainly because I have a spine problem and can hardly move my head, but had read so many times how this device was wonderful in Flight Sims (and other games) had been watching for one of the older Track IR devices on Ebay for a long time and hoped to score one cheaply always to be outbid at the last minute ... these things really hold their value well for some reason? Once I figured that out and realised they wont ever wear out or break down ... at least not in my lifetime I bit the bullet and bought a new Track IR 5 and Track Clip pro from Flightstore. my reasoning was if it does not work for me I can sell it on Ebay and get most of what I paid for it back, the good news is even with a little head movement I can use it to great effect, the six degrees of freedom part less so, cant look under and up in some of the best 3D panels for example but I'm happy enough I was about £125 for it from Flightstore UK, small change really when we consider what we spend on other hardware and even software for this hobby. mutley 4,498
Hi Colin, Do you have a three-screen set up? I have Track-IR with three screens and it makes me feel quite nauseous, it's great with a single screen and as you say ideal if you have limited neck movement. I must spend some time on the set up. I'm sure I can slow the speed of it down so I am not whizzing left to right.
allardjd 1,853
When I first started to use TrackIR I could only do it for about 5-10 minutes at a time as head movements would induce a slight nausea - that soon passed and I can do it for hours on end now. M31 0
Hi Joe, no I was thinking of getting three screens but settled on a Dell U3011 30" LCD last year 2560 x 1600 res, very nice, seems to me screens are moving to 16/9 ratio widescreen now, the U3011 is 16/10 widescreen that gives a bit more vertical real estate for sims. EDIT: Just adding to this while I have Photobucket open ... here is my Dell U3011 from when it arrived last year, it really is an awesome LCD, no real backlight bleed I can see and fantastic blacks and vivid colour, comes pre-calibrated, and a three year on site warranty, if mine fails they drop off another and pick up this one I'd have loved 3 screen's but with my spine problem I think this is best for my usage. Beside a regular ratio 19" LCD for scale.
stu7708 244
Wow Colin, that's one massive screen!! I'm running dual 23" screens at work and thought those were big Been looking for a 16:10 aspect ratio screen for some time now to get those extra pixels of heigth (not only good for sims but also when reading documents, editing movies or mixing music), too bad they often are twice as expencive compared to a 16:9 screen of the same size... might have to take a quick look on Dell to see what kind of price they are.. for some reason it never occured to me that they sell screens too. On the other hand I could always get myself two or three of these bad boys
M31 0
Those screens look very nice Stu and reasonably priced, again 16:9 ratio though ... I know why monitors are going this aspect ratio and its because this is what the Cinema mostly adopts and your average large screen TV is this widescreen ratio ... if only 16:10 were to be kept on, its definitely better for gamers and flight simmers not just for one screen but three too I reckon ... 3 x 16:9 can look like one long narrow strip, whereas 3 x 16:10 gives a decent bit more vertical real estate., the difference between 16:9 and 16:10 or for EG 1920 x 1080 and 1920 x 1200 is quite significant for Flight Simming. I read somewhere recently that monitor resolutions are going to go through the roof again soon (way more than 2560 x 1600 I use) just when our graphic cards were getting on top of things too but still keeping 16:9 as the main ratio ... its never ending is technology progress and trying to keep up with it
stu7708 244
Ehm.. no actually not 16:9.. more along the lines of 21:
M31 0
Ehm.. no actually not 16:9.. more along the lines of 21:9 My mistake, but still too wide for me I see Dell ... who despite their name actually sell really good Monitors (they dont make them they just badge them) are offering a similar screen in this ratio too now ... http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MO-066-DE I honestly reckon a ratio like that is fine for a single monitor, but add two more and its too wide for me, yep its kept in perspective, but I dunno, just not right for me somehow? To use a graphic analogy, three screens of this ratio must be like peeking out of an old WW2 pill-box, fine if all you do is watch the beaches for invasion, but in flight sim we look up and down too ... and yep we can get round that with Track IR or even the hat switch ... its all good though and really down to what each individual wants for Flight Sim. Track IR and one 16:10 for me every time
