Mistwalker 3
Thanks James. I'm going to give this a try.
Christopher Low 63
So, do these tweaks actually reduce the chances of an OOM?
jaydor 345
So, do these tweaks actually reduce the chances of an OOM? Â Â Yes, as most OOM's are Virtual memory issues..
jaydor 345
A lot of people will tell you that FSX being 32bit can only use a maximum of 4Gb of memory. But they also forget that FSX runs on top of windows, so windows has to access the memory also.  So by giving windows extra room for expansion in the VR area by increasing the VR as much as possible allows FSX to use it's maximum.  Result a more stable platform = smother FSX..  Don't be frightened to try it. The only way to destroy your computer is to hit it with a sledge hammer.. The rest is recoverable.. Christopher Low 63
I am already testing it
britfrog 180
hi , well I am willing to admit to have learnt something today, i knew of the virtual memory mod and already had mine at 16000 so as I have a similar p.c. to jaydor upped it to 25000 the only noticeable difference is fsx takes a bit longer to load up. However the colour change mod I hadnt come across and have to say it does make things a bit better for me, Thanks for that ! Â Â
Mistwalker 3
I'm afraid it didn't work for me. I started getting FSX crashes so had to change back to computer controlled virtual memory.
britfrog 180
I'm afraid it didn't work for me. I started getting FSX crashes so had to change back to computer controlled virtual memory. Â AS you have a similar p.c to myself and jaydor i nd a LOD of 3.5 then there has to be something wrong with your FSX.CFG have you modified it? if not you will need to , somewhere on our site here is a link plus an automatic fix by bojote
Mistwalker 3
I haven't messed with my cfg file, Brit. I have no idea why that virtual memory tweak would do something different on my setup to anyone elses. After doing it, FSX would ocasionally freeze and the only way out was to ctrl/alt/del and shut it down from there. It was giving no OOM message though. I'll have a mooch around the forum and look for that fix. Thanks for the suggestion.
Mistwalker 3
I'm looking at that auto tweaking tool now but it says the last time it was updated was three years ago. My system is only a couple of months old so are the changes this tool would make be still relevent?
britfrog 180
OK give this a try, rename your existing fsx.cfg as fsxold.cfg copy and paste the following into notepad and save it as fsx.cfg and copy it into the same location as your existing fsx.cfg  let us know how it works  // This file was tweaked on Jan 04, 2013 at 17:15 GMT using Bojote's automated FSX Tweaking & Tuning Service// Your Bruce (a.k.a. brian747) 142
 Er......  Bit worried about the idea of using someone else's entire fsx.cfg?  Apart from all the license information in the Trusted section, there's things like "[DISPLAY.Device.NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 Ti.1]" and so on which may not be appropriate for the recipient.  Mind you, I've never tried it. So it's just my 2¢......    Cheers,  Brian
Mistwalker 3
Thanks for taking the time to do this, Brit but as Brian mentions, I don't think it's that easy (though I'm a novice in such things) because, for example, the filepaths in your cfg are different to my settings because I installed to a different drive. Â If you suspect a corrupt or incorrect setting in my existing cfg file, if I were to delete it, would a new one be produced the next time I booted up FSX?
jaydor 345
Steve, does it only happen when FSX is running or does it happen in other programs?  Try placing your FSX disc in the tray and select repair when prompted, also do it for Acceleration as well.  It may be a corruption somewhere that the repair may over write. Try it; it will not do any harm to your set up..  James
Mistwalker 3
No mate, it's just FSX and only with the virtual memory tweak. Resetting it back to computer controlled stopped the crashes. I'll give the repair facility a spin tomorrow when I'm more awake and then try the tweak again. Thanks for the suggestion.
Mistwalker 3
Well a few things came together over the last two days which forced me into a few hours work to see if I could get FSX to play nice on my system. Firstly I bought Shawbury Fields yesterday and on top of my other issues it immediately reduced the whole thing down to a slide show, which should not have been happening on this system. I used the repair facility on my FSX disc and, after a panic attack before realising I had to also repair Acceleration, FSX booted up substantially faster than before. Flying in the Shawbury Fields area also saw a vast improvement but needed a little more tweaking. I dropped Special Effects, Water effects and ground shadows to zero, left everything else maxed and she's running smooth as silk right now (touch wood). Oh and it just so happened that a new Graphics driver was released today, too so I installed that for good measure. Â I've not tried the virtual memory tweak again yet. I'll do a few more hours flying first to make sure I'm not getting any crashes and if not, I'll leave it alone. Thanks again for all the suggestions, guys.
mutley 4,497
James, Â I had some good results with the colour tweak today, thanks for sharing. Â My VM settings were already set high but are system managed, I don't suffer from OOM, probably as I run my graphics on a high setting, but not extreme. Â Cheers, Joe
Bruce (a.k.a. brian747) 142
Fantastic result, Steve, well done!  (I've had a few of those heart-stopping moments here and there, so I feel for you!).  Fingers crossed you're on the up and up from now on.    Cheers,  Brian
Mistwalker 3
Thanks Brian. Yup, when I tried starting up FSX after repairing the main installation it just kept crashing before getting to the start screen. I immediately had visions of having to do a fresh install followed by hours of putting back all those addons. Then I remembered Acceleration. Oh thank gawd!
Bruce (a.k.a. brian747) 142
<grin>  Considering the pain we have to put up with along the way in order to keep going, we must seriously love this hobby!!     Cheers,  Brian
Mistwalker 3
Okay, I'm officially getting annoyed now. I'm at the point now where I've got to seriously consider not buying any more detailed scenery such as Shawbury fields. If I have to drop the settings way down below max just to prevent the OOM when flying over such scenery, what's the point in buying it? I just OOMed out even when flying over it at 13000ft. Ridiculous. I get a beeping warning noise a minute or so before getting the OOM so is there any way to take advantage of that by somehow dumping the cache or something whilst in-game so I can avoid the crashes? I have the same prob with flying anything with a glass cockpit regardless of what scenery is nearby. Â Is it worth me foregoing buying any more scenery and aircraft and saving my money to buy P3D? I'm assuming that doesn't suffer with this problem?
Christopher Low 63
I feel your pain, Mistwalker. I have been enjoying simple circuits at various airports for quite some time now, so OOMs have receded into the haze for the moment. However, I know full well that the threat will return if I attempt longer flights to and from (and over) highly detailed areas. I think the best option is to disable any high detail scenery areas that you will not be seeing during a particular flight, and then hope for the best. For example, if you are flying over Shawbury Fields, then disable any other ES software for that flight (assuming that they aren't your destination), and maybe reduce the AI percentage a bit. Yes, it's a pain in the neck, but that's the nature of FSX in 2013. I personally feel that anyone who never suffers from OOMs in DX9 mode is not really taxing their system with super detailed scenery, autogen, and complex AI at the same time. They may say that they are, but there must be a difference somewhere, otherwise they would suffer the same fate.

I have a .pdf file distributed by avsim which tells you how to set up fsx if you pm me with your email address i will send it to you however if you think your problems are going to go away without playing with fsx.cfg then you are in for a surprise. the other alternative is this:  http://www.venetubo.com/fsx.html  one final suggestion, you may find that somehow your graphic cards drivers are corrupted in which case you may find it best to uninstall your graphics card and re-install it with the latest drivers  ,
Mistwalker 3
Thanks for your answers, guys. My LOD is set at 3.5 and has been for quite a while now. I would hope I shouldn't have to set it any lower than that. I tested to see if traffic was the issue by parking my A/C at Newcastle Extreme at the end of a flight and have let is sit there for the last 5 hours with AI set at 100%. It's still sat there now with all that traffic coming and going. I checked out that cfg service you linked to a while back, Brit and concluded it's highly doubtful it's still relevant to new systems as it was last updated 3 years ago. My graphics driver is always up to date as I get an automatic heads up whenever a new one is released. The last one was updated on the 24th May. This whole computer was brand new on the 9th May and as a result, FSX is pretty much the only thing on it apart from my browser (and the usual junk that comes with Winblows). My other settings are as follows....  Detail Radius - Medium Mesh complexity - 80 Mesh resolution - 5m Texture resolution - 30cm Water effects - none Land detail textures - checked Scenery complexity - Extremely dense Autogen density - Extremely dense (I have photoreal scenery active for the UK so this setting is irrelevant anyway) Ground scenery shadows - unchecked Special effects detail - low  The only thing I haven't tried is disabling all other high detail scenery not on my route which if that proves to be the fix, I'll be abandoning FSX as I really don't have the patience for going through that shenanegens before every flight. I wouldn't mind taking a look at that pdf of yours though, Brit if I may. It would be much appreciated. I'll send you my addy.  Thanks again, guys. I appreciate the shoulders to cry on.
