stu7708 244 Posted August 2, 2013 Report Share Posted August 2, 2013 Yes, yesterday saw a first for spotters at Stockholm-Arlanda, but more on that later... Headed out to ESSA about an hour before the real pray was due to arrive.. when I left home (takes about 15 minutes to drive up there) runway 26 was active for landings. Thankfully I listened in on ATC during the car ride, because all of a sudden they started to divert all incoming traffic to runway 01L due to Cb activity around the approach to 26.. sounded good because there's a lot more parking space for spotters there... When I arrived the big crowd had still not gotten there so I got a good parking spot, and started waiting ready to head out if ATC started vectoring approaching traffic to runway 26 again.. but in the 40 minutes or so I had to wait a few other planes did pass by.. First a 737-800 from Norwegian Followed by a 757-200 from Icelandair Scandinavian made two appearances, first a 737-800 Followed by a 737-700 Next a FinnAir A319. As this one was approaching from the east I was almost ready to switch locations. When he called in to approach the crew was actually given a choice of which runway to use since there was Cb activity to circum navigate for both 26 and 01L.. at first he opted for 26, but later requested to switch to 01L.. Next up a 737-800 from the Turkish carrier Pegasus Airlines Not 100% sure but I think this unmarked Saab 2000 flies for Braathens Another 737-800 from Norwegian.. Due to the closing of runway 26 ESSA was now operating with only one runway active, so there was a bit of traffic holding short of the runway waiting for a gap to take off in.. A Saab 340 from the almost ironically named airline NextJet... and no, the have no jets in their fleet as far as I know... By now that special event was getting close, and there was lots and lots of cars arriving.. That KLM 737 that was holding short finally got in the air, and before the real pray would land ATC cleared the Norwegian 737 for take-off too... And then it came in to view, the reason all of us had taken time out of our vacation and headed up to ESSA.. any guesses on what it is..... It's the first ever scheduled flight of a Dreamliner into Arlanda... (There was one last year from Ethiopian Airlines, but I think that one was empty, and more or less out on a promotion tour) And as of yesterday Qatar Airways will have a daily service between Arlanda and Doha using the B787 exclusively!! Safe landing, and no sign of fire either Thanks for looking. All photos are taken by me, and are more or less unedited.. Do you use Flightradar24 to track the flights? There are some other great apps for iPad and iPhone for tracking flights but I have found Flightradar24 to be the best. FlightRadar24 was running on the Iphone for tracking, that's been my go to app (as well as website) for flight tracking for many years now. Actually, when I started using it the site was all in Swedish and was called flygradar.nu... Normally that would be enough, but yesterday I was also running the LiveATC app listening in on ESSA Approach to be able to pick up on any changes in runways early on... They had to rent a bunch of A340s for the long haul lines, and I saw one of those only last week. So Qatar beat them to it. @Alan: Dang mate, you actually had me bring out my Swedish-English dictionary to look up proliferation... That's rare... I had the sentiment right though, just needed to confirm it As you say, SAS and Norwegian flights into ESSA are abundant and probably make up far more than half off the aircraft movements. NextJet is a fairly new player that stepped in to fill the hole left in the domestic market when another Swedish carrier, Skyways, went belly up about 18 months ago. From what I've understood they are working hard to increase the number of long haul flights both to the US and eastward. Norwegian is aiming to have ESSA as some sort of hub once their Dreamliners enter service, but I guess that adding Qatar is another part of that strategy since they are a new player up here. Is it something that is enforced throughout the UK or is it up to each airport to decide? At ESSA there are two official spotting locations, one at the northern end of runway 01R/19L and the one where these shots are taken at the southern end of 01L/19R. East of the airport, at the end of runway 08/26, there's also a place where you can park off the road, but that's not an official location. Never heard of anyone being asked to leave though... I'm pretty sure I've posted shots from all three locations on the forum earlier, just dig around and see if you can find them. The place east of the airport even let's you get up among the lights leading into the runway.. there should be a few shots taken straight up at approaching planes a mere 4-500 meters out from the runway.. @Brett: It felt pretty special seeing it come in, and I've never seen so many people gathered there before. There was even families that came out with picnic-basket! But my wife didn't understand why I was so excited Link to post Share on other sites
