Jet aircraft these days are commonplace, however, every one of them is in some way directly descended from these 4 aircraft. Jet propulsion was being developed during the 1930s (although it had been proposed in 1910 by Romanian, Henri Coanda) in both the UK and Germany and to a lesser extent in the USA and Italy. However inspite of Frank Whittles engine being ready first, British government prevarication meant that it was Germany's Hans von Ohain whjo got the first Pure Jet Aircraft into the air on 27 Aug 1939, however it was kept secret for a while and the first one to actually be made public was the Italian Caproni-Campini M1 Motorjet, This however was NOT a pure jet as it used a conventional piston engine to drive it's compressor. Britains Gloster E28/39 Pioneer followed on 15 May 1941 and bringing up the rear using British engine designs the Bell XP-59A flew in the USA on 1 Oct 1942. None of these aircraft were intended for combat operations although some XP-59s were fitted with guns as proof of concept. The work done on these aircraft went on to influence the first generation of fighters (although the Caproni proved to be a technological dead -end and was soon forgotten)and the rest as they say is history.

The HE-178, Only one was built used purely for research.

Bell XP59A, several were built and most gave good service for years mainly as research or chase aircraft and then unmanned target drones.
