Leg 19: El Loa (SCCF) to Campo Arenal (SA11)

Recommended Posts

I awoke to the sordid sounds of music South American style from a juke box outside in the corridor of my hotel.  I had arrived the evening before quite tired after my trip down from LA, but after a few shots of the Tequila I had headed for my room to check my eyelids for pinholes.  Now the sun was up and the music loud.  I had gained a place in the well known ATWC and it was my turn to take the baton onward.

I had been given the departure and destination airports from Joe, But what was this (SA11) Campo Arenal? It sounded like something the doctor would prescribe to stick up your arse.

But I was in deep trouble, as I had no plane and Joe had not passed the company credit card to me.  Sneakily saving some bucks me thinks.  But there was a glimmer of hope on the horizon.  I knew an old flame Carla operated her own airline in this part of the world; we had met many years ago in Madrid when she was in the Guardia Civil diplomatic protection section whilst I was Military Attaché in the British Embassy.

I must admit I did enjoy the way she had provided my personal protection.  So after a phone call to Carla and explained my position she was only too pleased to help out and luck was in as she was doing a trip into Campo Arenal today.  But she was flying from Cerro Morrena (SCDA) and agreed to stop into El Loa (SCCF) to pick me up and say Helloa.

But now it was time to try and find Brett, Joe had given me a photo of him so that it would help me find him quicker.  But why did he have the words moderator tattooed on his forehead?   Time was getting on and as the people dwindled away from the departure lounge there was only me and a younger looking guy left.  So I made my way over to him and noticed the baton in his left hand and he was looking at a photo in his right hand.  I said are you Brett?  He answered yes and asked if I was James.  He said I did not look anything like the photo Joe had given him of me:

Then I showed him the photo Joe had given me of him.

We could hear the chuckles of that Mut from here; Brett was a far nicer guy that you could hope to meet.  (Pay me later Brett)

So after our handshake and farewell I headed out onto the concourse to await Carla.

Carla was as good as her word as I watched her taxi to a stand;

But what was this?  Carla had painted under the Los Amerigos logo 5th ATWC Baton relay on the aircraft along with the Hangar logo on the tail.

What a sweet lady, but and there is always one of them, what was it going to cost me?  Mmm!  She dropped the airstair door without cutting the engines and shouted get in, I glanced the main cabin and there no passengers?  She shouted close the door and use the F/O seat.  I had just closed the door and she was moving before I was in the F/O seat,

“Get strapped in” she said, as we were on a freebee with the landing fees.  South America operates on a different planet to the rest of us.  It was good to see her again

We and the Baton were airborne within moments

I said to Carla what is it about this Campo thing and she replied you will not find it on many charts as it was primarily for a mine company.  We were making good progress on the plan

So I asked why no passengers, Oh! “I am taking machine parts in the hold and then the return will be with mine workers”.  But she added “We are on our own and the autopilot is on”.  I noticed that glint in her eyes and had slipped my harness before she could say “San Miguel”.

We were making good progress.

Then on the turn it was time to return to our seats:

Carla was a good flyer and in these high mountain areas, that was the difference between life and death

The top of decent arrived and we were on the downward drift

It was not long and she told me to drop the gear (I raised my eyebrows and she laughed)

We were lined up

Moments almost down

Campo Arenal is a runway turn-around type when using Runway 6, (No taxiways) before you head for the apron.

The airport is very modern having been built specifically for the mine company.  I could not see any sign of Andrew as we taxied in

After shutdown Carla asked how I was getting back and that there was no need to book a hotel room that night!

So I shouted back, “As soon as I find Andrew”................................................... Life’s good..  :winka:

Flight plans used.

Great PIREP James. :thum:  Glad you decided to join the ATWC and it was nice meeting you too. :)  That Mutley guy does have a sense of humor, funny pic's.  Looks like I can use a nail trimming.

If you would be so kind, what site did you use for airport info(pictured upper right), I can't read the bar.

btw-Carla is very pretty although see looks somewhat siliconized in the picture. :whis:
