britfrog 180
Now on iPlayer, http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b03wtnfv/Jumbo_The_Plane_that_Changed_the_World/ I player only works in the UK so had to use a VPN to get it. a great documentary . As I mentioned some months ago All the Pan Am planes were haneded over to Pan Am in Nassau (to avoid US taxes) where I lived and worked for Pan Am at the time. some months earlier the runway had been extended to be one of the longest in the world (paid for by Mr.Tripp) but no-one knew why, then we had some airstairs arrive that didnt fit any aircraft that we knew about they were far too tall,, we had all seen and read articles in Flight magazine on the development of the 747 but only the station manager knew what was going to happen and he was staying schtum. So one day we were all at work and we recieved notice of an unexpected vip flght and Mr Tripp turned up (he had a house on the island) so we knew something was up and finally ATC let the cat out of the bag about an hour before the 747 arrived. Well we watched it arrive and as they said on the doc it seemed to fly so slowly, we parked it up away from the terminal and climbed on board Man it was huge! of course now we are blasé about its size but back then it looked like a sKyscraper with wings. Over the next few months we were treated to several more hand overs, and then it all became common place, now we hardly look if one flies over. Time and tide waits for no man.
