Baggage handler in action.  Somewhere in the Pacific Northwest.  I was surprised as this was the first time I have seen a baggage handler loading luggage on a plane and the luggage cart actually emptied and the luggage moved up an animated conveyor belt.

Pretty cool, have never seen that.  Do you remember which airport or can you check your logbook. I would like to see if I have it.

Brett,

It is at KMHR.  The baggage boy/girl is still hard at work loading the  Horizon plane.  Select Gate 2 and she'll be off to your right doing her job.

Cool beans, that's Mather Airport, Sacramento , CA. I wonder if this is a new people flow added to FTX:Gold Northern California or if it is in their other products too.

Now I know why my bags are all beat up and arrive late. The baggage handlers don't bother opening the hatch. They just load the conveyor. What happens after that is someone else's problem. Maybe it's the cleanup crew that removes the mountains of luggage sitting beside where the aircraft used to be.

;)

I just love the body language in pic 3. Talk about follow-through!

This reminds me of a real-world observation, from long ago and at an airport I can't remember.  I was sitting in my seat in an airliner, I believe at an intermediate stop on the way to my destination.   Watching out the window from my seat I saw a tug with an attached line of covered carts snake up beside the aircraft.  The driver got out and opened the sides of the carts - can't remember how many, but more than one.  Apparently they only had one side that opened (covered by a tarp of some kind if I remember correctly), and it faced away from the aircraft.

He proceeded to take canvas mail bags out of the carts and heave them over the top of the carts - about 6' high - where they landed on the concrete apron on the other side of the carts and as the pile built, on one another.  When he had finished that he went around the line of carts and began to load the mail bags on a belt going up to, I assume, a cargo hatch - I couldn't see it.

Anyway, remember this next time you mark "Fragile" on a package.

Believe me having worked "airside" as a coach driver I've seen all sorts of things happen to luggage. On one occasion a case full of wine was dropped from the aircraft hatch straight onto the tarmac. we all heard the crash and then watched in horror as gallons of booze suddenly began running across the apron! If we were following a baggage train and case fell off it, we were not allowed to touch it in case we were accused of tampering with luggage. Instead we either had to swerve round the errant case or if not possible we had to run over them! That's just a couple of things but I could tell you a lot more.
