stu7708 244
Cheers everyone.. Me and my wife will be visiting London this summer (we were fortunate enough to get tickets to the Monty Python show) (**ducks for cover as Jess comes swinging with a bat**) Anyway, having never been to London previously I'm just fishing around for suggestions on hotels in the area around, or at least not to far away from, the O2 arena.. Pointers on places to avoid are also more than welcome. Thanks Micke
J G 927
Being only 30 mins train ride from Central London I have never had to stay in a hotel there. In fact the only nights I have slept in London were in hospital, and I wouldn't recommend that. - St Thomas' Hospital when I was a child, - my wife works there now. having said that, I am happy to show you the sites, having worked in London for the first 19 years of my working life, I can point you at some jewels off the beaten track. britfrog 180
I can Recommend on , a bit expensive and a bit out of London but a unique experience and not too expensive if you use one of the booking agencies http://www.greatfosters.co.uk/ its like having a break in a film set , the gardens and the rooms are just unreal
brett 2,315
Just as a side note, it never hurts to call a hotel(at times of day the desk folks aren't busy) to get a price and compare it with what you got from the online places first. Two out of five times I have gotten a better price from a direct call. Not sure why this is but it's been my experience in the past. It's a good idea to do both within a small time frame because things change so fast and you don't want to lose the room.
hlminx 301
My husband and I went for a hotel close to the Excel centre right on the flightpath from London City Airport. It was a 5-10 minute walk to the station and then the light railway took us straight to the O2. Was a cheap and cheerful place (place to lay your head) ...might have been the Holiday Inn or Premier Inn. But it was a few doors away from a fantastic family run Italian Restaurant. Ps. Well jealous that you have Python tickets! In which case you might prefer the Hilton instead of the cheap n cheerful
dogtrack 346
Have used the Kingsway Hall Hotel at Covent Garden a few times. http://www.kingswayhall.co.uk/default-en.html Just a few hundred yards from Holborn Tube Station. Comfortable walk even with cases. I always park out at Heathrow and get the Tube in to Holborn. Very central and comfortable. Reasonable prices for London.
dodgy-alan 1,587
Have a look on Laterooms.com http://www.laterooms.com/ If you can stay as far out as possible, The tube, trains and buses can get you in and out of the city quickly enough. London hotel prices are simply extortionate. Also try and avoid the ones around Heathrow as they too are expensive now simply due to their location. There are alot of nice places about though. It depends on the size of your wallet!
stu7708 244
Thanks everyone. I will take a closer look at your suggestions once our current building project is finished (hopefully the first part will be finished over Easter. @hlminx: Considering the price on the Python tickets cheap and cheerful is more likely than the Hilton
Jess-b 420
Although I'm still not talking to you, you jammy git, having looked around, and based on my experience of the chain, there are two premier in s in the area that offer cheap rooms, but good quality stuff. Your first choice is London Greenwich, which isn't to far from the O2. The downside is a lack of a tube line. The other choice is London city airport. It's on the docklands light railway and just a few short stops for the jubilee line and the O2 stop. As an example, rooms for Thursday the 10th of July is £59 for London city, and around the £100 for the Greenwich hotel. Hope this helps, Jess Ps. I don't have a bat, just a scythe. hlminx 301
Think it was the London City Premier Inn which we stayed at. Its quite an old hotel but as usual, the pillows are fantastic! Definitely cheap n cheerful though. The DLR is close as Jess says. We stayed there when we went to see (ahem) Elvis ! Hope you get something sorted out
rob16584 42
There is also another premier in a further 5 mins down the line that I've stayed at. If you don't fancy paying for the breakfasts there is a tesco/asda opposite that will have a cafe. IIRC the Premier Inn restaruant did themed nights for the food too i.e fish + chips, pie + peas, indian etc...

I guess I'm would be in a similar position if asked about hotels in Stockholm.. Sure, I could name a few but I really have no idea what they are like from a visitors viewpoint. I might get back to you on some pointers on things to see, but my wife have already scheduled a fair amount of things she have to visit

But I'll definitely file their "all inclusive" option for a future visit less focused on the city of London it self !

Can't find a London City Premier Inn, but there is one just by London City Airport called London Dockland (Excel), so I assume that's the one. Looks like a good choice, and £319 for three nights including breakfast isn't too bad. I guess it would be even better if we could fly to London City... And I think I prefer a bat over scythe to be honest Think it was the London City Premier Inn which we stayed at. Its quite an old hotel but as usual, the pillows are fantastic! Hope you get something sorted out Elvis at the O2, Oh my.... was his last name by any chance Costello I also had a look at Radisson Blu Edwardian New Providence Wharf Hotel right across the Themes from the O2 (almost within swimming distance ), but that's more than £200 more expensive for the same period so it's not my first choice unless I can find a good deal on hotels.com or elsewhere... rob16584 42
I think it was the Excel one we stayed at, as with all premier inns, it was great value. Plus if you don't get a good night's sleep they'll claim to refund your money. Although I don't think the missus snoring counts

J G 927
How was it, the food I mean. The food was good, but it was about 35 years ago, so I cant speak for it now. The company is still good though. One things for sure, that night I bit off more than I could chew!
stu7708 244
That's looked like a nice place John! I think I saw that on a traveling site and liked what I saw, but it wasn't possible to book with breakfast from the site, and thus I scratched from the list.
