This looks fantastic.  If this is what we can expect from the new "France" way of producing lighting then I would like to see the existing products upgrading.

One improvement that I would like to see would be to produce shipping lane lights, lighthouses, buoys etc.

Hi Chris.

Shipping lane lights would only have to be near harbours I guess, and I don't think they need to be accurate, just give the impression of green and red lights in the harbour mouth.

ok, I’ll entertain almost anything

inaccurate data, never going to happen :P

i hate to disappoint you John

but that’s just not data that’s within NE's scope and definition

there are many sources of light, traffic lights, rail road crossings, billboards, colored shop windows etc.

we are working on a very large area slices; we have to be very specific and accurate with the features we selected to render for NE

Thank you Geoffrey

i take it that you guys like the current results?

personally i think the group did a phenomenal work
it’s very different from the way we usually render a region
allot more consideration and special techniques were deployed to get a more authentic result
it is a very fine line to walk; the group have adopted every recommendation the community had presented

im saying this without mentioning that; they already did many parts of France prior to NE France project
including lighting for many city's; using NE's lighting system (contributed)
the starting point was already beyond anything i can do personally for that region,
they know the area upside down; colors, shapes, what’s there and what’s not
factoring these in small scale is a fun project; which is what they have before
rendering this through the whole country; is a challenge
being involved throughout this special edition region
I couldn’t ask for a better team mates, or better results

The clip is focused on showcasing the grid layout and the rustic flow result
The responses are positive from the French community so far as for accuracy and realism sense

Because I don't know the area well Chris, I can't say how much it does or doesn't reflect reality.  If you gave us a section of the UK rendered in the same way I could compare it against current NEUK and what I know of the area to give a more considered opinion?

But, none of that takes away from the fact that clearly a lot of attention has gone into that render and it looks extremely good.  Cheers K

Thanks Kevin

totally understand; im the same way when it comes to France (no clue)

From the feedback currently coming in from the French community; it is an excellent rendition!

here's a timelaps view i found to compare http://www.hdtimelapse.net/details.php?movie_id=1728

the same can be done for the UK

im not sure the grid is similar or fit for such complex algorithm

in France many of the region roads are very rustic and very old without lighting system

you will notice most of the connecting towns don’t have lighting on the roads between them; this is all taken 1:1 from real life

it is by far te most complex region we've worked on so far thus far

now about NEUK; im sure there are numbers of roads that don’t have lighting in them

the question that needs to be asked is; what’s the relation between those misplaced roads lights to the accurately placed lights

if the ratio is too big; it an overhaul

im not afraid of redoing something or improving existing

If i get second thoughts about something; even if it’s been released

Mathijs doesn’t like it when I send this email saying “im not in love with my work”;

I’m going to redo it (and he gets them trust me on this)

ive recently overhauled NE Dubai, Israel, and Greece

not because anything was wrong with them; I just didn’t like the results 100%; few weeks after

no one had complaint or asked for them to be changed

we take pride in what we do; it is important for us to know you guys are using and enjoying our work

NE didn’t start as a commercial project; it just got very complicated and ended up as one

Our spirit of sharing and making sure our end users are happy

is still coming from the same place we were before we got commercial with NE, and will remain as such!

Hi Chris.

I currently have the UK, Belgium, Netherlands and Luxembourg as well as Germany.

I cant wait to get France but I am concerned that if the rendering is significantly different then it wont sit well with the sections I already have.

What can you tell me about France that will dispel my worries?

J.

Thank you for generous support John

(I hope my previous  humor come through properly)

I’m smiling reading about your concern; it is a valid one

Your should know well before i enlighten you with technicalities

that I would never release something that’s not perfect for use; or in line with our standards

now for the technical part

even though we buffered many sections with special algorithm

the whole country is still rendered as whole; with full night coverage

select any region from your existing NE’s

go into level 0 folder; and open any file there with TMFViewer

if you add all the tiles in this folder to the view in TMFViewer

you will get the whole country traced out; it looks black

but if you zoom in; you will see the splash up close

as you zoom in; the night signature will appear

you can zoom down to individual ground splash

you will notice many areas are not with splash; but are still rendered with black night

this is true for all NE regions; the whole country is rendered this way

so even if sections are without lighting; we still apply night effect over the entire region

in the pics below; is Marseilles Nightmap loaded in TMFViewer

this is the night map the clip was taken over

first pics is the whole test area night map, second zoomed in one level

I hope this puts your mind at ease :)
