grimsbee5 0
Having watched several Flying Alaska episodes, I would like to open a second base in Alaska. (First base KFHR ) Of course I was thinking PAUN, Unalakleet. I even downloaded and installed some add on scenery for PAUN. The great crosswinds are pretty fun at this location, but the surrounding area seems uninteresting - for miles around, especially from which to operate a base. Does anyone have any other locations for Alaska bases that would be great eye candy and and challenging at the same time?
Corsaire31 419
My canadian company has bases in Sitka (PASI) Yakutat (PAYA) and Cordova-Smith (PACV), operating C185F amphibians and tundras. I like the Sitka bay which I find beautiful. The runway is built on the water and there is a small island on the approach path from the North. Here is a picture with my Goose : PACV itself is nothing great but for inland flights you can go up and down the Copper river, which is a beautiful sight :
brett 2,315
Hi Nick and welcome to Mutley's Hangar. Alaska is a beautiful place to open any base and will challenge your flying skills too. Do you have any addon scenery for the area, if not then adding ORBX/FTX will certainly increase your scenic pleasure. The same goes for the pacific northwest region which I find very entertaining. I fly out of Concrete(3W5) in AH and am always in awe of what a few addons have done to the place. When paired with real world weather it can be a downright pain in the arse when a cargo timeline is winding down, as Loic can attest to I am sure.
Mr Dirt 0
Like Corsaire I fly out of PACV. most flights go inland to some very short grass strips. A STOL plane is a must. I also find it nice to have a plane with a reverse thrust if possible. I fly a Lionheart Quest Kodiak. I have tried other places in Alaska as well. There is alot to be seen all over the great Northwest.
grimsbee5 0
I recently installed FTX Global Base, which is a big improvement over default. I will have to wait for a bit to install FTX Vector, but that is the plan. Thanks for the pics and the base ideas! Any others? Today is turkey day - gotta quick schedule my AI crew and then go visit! brett 2,315
Happy Thanksgiving, enjoy. FTXVector is a big improvement and I find it a real treat to see rivers and lakes as they should be(or closer than they were at least). Finding a base is a personal thing so it's best to do some flying to search out for a nice one. The lighted ones are more expensive but worth it in Alaska and the larger ones cost too much and usually involve to much taxing. Find a nice midsize lighted field(ILS a plus) in the middle of a lot of airports within a hundred miles. @Mr Dirt- Welcome to the forums here John, thanks for joining in. allardjd 1,853
When choosing a smaller or medium-size base, try to pick one that's near a large airport with no serious terrain issues, good navaids, big runways and at least one ILS. If returning to your base in bad WX, having a well equipped divert field nearby that's easy to get into is a plus and it's just a short hop home when the WX clears off. Captain Coffee 2,030
In that area I prefer to have a base on the edge of the water...often weather closes in on me and, not being Instrument Rated and completely dependent on the GPS and a map for navigation, I can still get home following the water and the GPS without fear of broadsiding mountains. Mr Dirt 0
Thanks for the welcome Brett. I have been lurking around since Corsaire talked abot Air Hauler on another forum. I brought it and have been hooked since. I agree that an Airport with lights is a must as the weather as close at times and night comes quick this time of year.

Corsaire31 419
Thanks Corsair good to see you. I hope everything is going well for you. Yes all is great ! Enjoying my recent retirement (flying a lot more...) still flying my WOFF own campaigns in the background, having a blast at my Aeropostale adventure (you can have a look in the Member's blogs above if interested) and about to fly again in space with Elite Dangerous (Elite was the first game I played back in the 80s on my C64 with the 1541 disquette reader which was twice as heavy as the central unit !) Mr Dirt 0
Glad you are enjoying retirement. I look forward to that day soon. I just finished reading your blog here. Very interesting tyhe way you set that up and fly it. Also very well written. I have not flown very much in WOFF lately, but I did purchase the newest addon.. I like to keep up with the gentleman on their site. I stop by and read whats going on every day. I have been with that software since phase 1. I did fly a couple quick combats yesterday. The new version has the shadowing mod in it and it looks great. Maily been flying AH lately. Take care and enjoy the retirement. Heres to blue skies and good landing John
Corsaire31 419
Glad you're appreciating my little story, I really enjoy flying it and writing about it, as this is part of the history of the town I live in. I have other plans for next year and new adventures ! Didn't buy the WOFF extension yet as I find the 1.26 being already very good and not interested by 2/3 of what is in 2.0. May be one day when it's on sale ? Fair winds and following seas !
