Two aviation stories have hit the headlines this week and both highlight how out of touch certain chief executives and politicians are.

The first, Ms Cho the daughter of the owner of Korean Airlines and a chief exec of the airline went nuts over not being served nuts on a plate. She publicly berated the offending steward making him kneel and apologise and then made the plane return to the gate to offload the poor guy. The JFK ATC and the FAA were not impressed and I'm sure the passengers weren't too happy either. Ms Cho's hissy fit has been a PR disaster for the airline, herself and Korea. I guess she bit off more than she could Cho.

The second is the computer meltdown at the NATS ATC centre on Friday which caused chaos for all concerned. It seems to be sorted now and things got back to normal pretty quickly. The NATS CEO, Richard Dawkin has apologised saying the problem was 'one bit of rogue code in 4 million bits if code'.

However, politicians are demanding enquiries into the matter and one MP has suggested the NATs CEO Richard Dawkin has his bonus docked.  If politicians had financial penalties for their cockups they would be joining the queues at the food banks.

Kind of related, I guess the CFO at Airbus has said some disparaging things about the A380 program including that the company might drop it entirely due to few new orders in 2014. There was a pretty significant drop in their stock price over a couple of days and the rest of the company executives are in full damage control mode and spinning the info every which way. Emirates' CEO is livid. Not politicians exactly, but the same level of corporate people as involved in the Korean story.

The economic impact on the places that build them, were that to happen, would be pretty tough.

I read about that too John, I think it was a finance director who made the comment and you can always rely on an accountant to tell you how it is.

Maybe Boeing saw the writing on the wall regarding the future of jumbos and played safe with the 787, a fuel efficient, mid to high capacity and both hub and point to pointer which appeals to the major and economy airlines. Hence Airbus are launching the A350, a 787 lookalike.

The A380 would only appeal to the majors on hub routes and therefore have a limited market.

Boeing should now counter attack Airbus in the short/medium range market.

Just my :twocents: worth.

Great post Geoff.  It would seem that the Chief Executives of Korean Air could benefit from the same CRM re-training their flight crews underwent after the slew of accidents they experienced during the 90's.  That mentality on the flight deck cost lives, in business it costs money.  That may be harsh though, and it was just an example of a little rich person throwing their weight around.

As for the NATS computer glitch, I'm surprised the politicians didn't try to blame everything on Russian/Chinese/North Korean hackers.  Failing that, maybe an ISIS terrorist attack.  They missed a trick there.   ;)

Regards,

M.

Given the lack of sense that permited a "hissy fit" in the first place, its certain that the stewards job was over anyhow...I hope he spent the rest of the taxi back to the gate calling her every abusive degrading word in the Korean language. "Children passengers, prease to cover ears, thank you....%^&$ (*%$ &^ #%$@%$ and your &^%$*$# *^%^*#  beotch!"

Latest on Ms Cho is that she er... Cho se to go round to the stewards abode to apologise in person but apparently they were out. One could speculate on where they were, perhaps they'd taken the noble way out and committed hari kari or maybe being interviewed as flight attendants for a well known Irish airline.

Cho cks away!

The steward has alleged that after he returned to Korea on another flight, senior company officials visited him at home several times to apologize for the witch's behavior and also to urge him to lie about the fact that she was abusive and that she demanded that the aircraft return to the gate so he could be put off. He was urged to say that it was his desire to be put off the plane. I guess he didn't agree to do that and has gone public with the fact that they tried to get him to lie about it to lessen the damage she caused the airline's reputation and "face".

Apparently it is still possible that she will be criminally charged with interfering with a crew or the operation of the aircraft, though I expect that's a long shot.

I've read that she's resigned as head of cabin service and catering but has retained her position as a company VP or some such. This may not be the latest and she may now be well and truly out, as she should be, but per the article I looked at she was still at the trough. I'm sure good ol' dad will see that she is well taken care of.

Ex-Korean Air executive gets 1 year in prison over 'nut rage'

http://www.foxnews.com/world/2015/02/12/ex-korean-air-executive-gets-1-year-in-prison-over-nut-rage/?intcmp=trending

She was found innocent of allegations she tried to tamper with witnesses and get them to change their stories, but was convicted of most of the rest of the numerous charges.  Prosecutors wanted a 3+ years sentence.

In her letter of remorse to the judge she also mentioned that she's only given soap, shampoo and underwear at prison and expressed gratitude to other prisoners who've freely shared their lotion, conditioner and other necessities with her.  How brutal - no macadamia nuts on the menu either, I'll bet.  Oh, the humanity!

One senior airline official was convicted of attempting to get the steward and others to change their stories and was sentenced to eight months in prison.

A government employee who leaked details of the investigation to the airline was sentenced to four months in prison.

"Daddy" who gave multiple executive positions to this witch and her two siblings was not charged and remains at the helm of the airline.
