Matt : "I was flying the Wash/Ore coast today in helis today...caught a bit of rain there and dodged ceilings and ridge lines a bit to stay GPS/VFR. Looks like you got a nice break today up North."

It was a positioning flight to pick up some cargo for Yakutat. I took off 20:15 GMT ( 12:15 local ) from Gustavus with a lower visibility and broken clouds at 2500 ft. It cleared up only 15 - 20 nms south of Skagway.

Just put my 2 penneth worth in - I love this plane had it for a while and still its great. Easy on frames and not difficult to pick up and go. Not sure about cargo though.

".....does it carry much cargo?"

From the Carenado 337 aircraft.cfg:

max_gross_weight = 4630
empty_weight     = 2830

LeftMain  = -10.5, -3.50, 2.5, 50, 0
RightMain = -10.5,  3.50, 2.5, 50, 0

(You can remove 2 rear seats and shave about 70-80 lbs off the empty weight if you wish...I fly it at 2750 empty. And you can edit the Fuel Quantity freeing up weight to allow AI pilots to carry more cargo per run...I left gas alone, and my AI can haul 1300 lbs of cargo in it, but rarely use it for AI. Like Loic, I like it for a personal rep grinder/touring plane. There are lots of better AI planes for money generation, but this is hard to beat for just fun flying to visit your bases, and having a "Single flying" plane with the back up of a second motor and no Torque issues on an engine failure is Quite nice.)

Cruise speed is listed at 150kts

Max speed is 220

Stall with flaps is 61

Great flying plane that can handle a wide variety of airfields...although it's not my personal favorite for short dirt strips, especially when fully loaded. The gear is a bit "springy" and I have flipped it on rutted fields before...not fun, not profitable. :)

cheers.

Matt

Well looks like Matt gave all the details...  I can only approve his message !  :)

Edit : today the ceiling was very low over Yakutat (between 500 and 1000 ft)  so I couldn't fly my cargo flight. I still have 20 hours to deliver, so I hope tomorrow will be better...

Finally could do my cargo flight today...  Ceiling was 1600 ft at Yakutat, it was enough since PAYA has ILS, VOR and NDB...  It was a nice ride through the mountains, listening to some good appropriate music on Winamp ( Bootliquor channel of SOMA FM )  :)

Isn't it hard not to start tapping your feet. :D Nice shot, must have been a nice flight. I haven't flown the C337 in quite awhile, I should remedy that as it's a fine aircraft. :thum:

I had my dose last night as I had the same feeling after looking at all these great shots of that unique looking plane :)

I am always sorta surprised that I don't see more of these flying around. They seem to be very sensible airplanes. High wing views and stability, twin engine "safety" without the huge off centered thrust issues of normal twins during an engine failure...and they seem to be reasonably priced from what I have seen of the used aircraft listings. Decently fast at around 170ish kts and carries 4 people and baggage. I am guessing they are not "specialized" enough in any aspect to attract niche customers. Not as fast as most twins (wont attract the cross country tour folks or small business commuters), not as much payload as many (many twins will carry 6 people...I am betting this is the main sales killer), ...a compromise plane that does many things well, but none brilliantly?

Cruise speed is more around 150 knots. It's also a plane of the 60s, are there still many flying ?  I know in France Reims Aviation built around 160 of them in the 70s, most for assistance, patrol and rescue missions.

I found one on sale in France for 70.000 Euros :   1968 - 2912 hrs
