Don't you just love the press!

People who write aviation news stories are required to fail a very strict IQ test. In the case of the Harrison Ford article, the author broke a cardinal rule by not including the phrase "nose dive".

EDIT: I guess in the case of this one I can't be too offended by the "nose dived" reference...

How the heck do you wind up landing that way after a loss of power?

My first impression was a botched stall recovery  - pushing the nose over and not having enough height to recover.

From the comments about them missing/avoiding the roadway...I suspect he tried for the roadway, saw cars in the way, and bailed out without enough speed to avoid stalling...causing the stall/not enough time to recover nose dive. Very tragic, and a courageous and selfless decision to make if so.

It reminds me of a Mr. Jim Wright from Wright tools, who made a replica of Hughes H1 Racer...gorgeous plane made with loving care to specs...and on the way back from Oshkosh he had mechanical problems, and attempted an emergency landing in Yellowstone park near old faithful geyser, but he also chose to bail, and as it transpired, sacrificed his own life and "went around", into some woods, when he saw hikers/tourists in the way. So sad.

An article about the Jim Wright H1 and it's crash:
